Genesis Academy History Genesis City’s Expanded wrap around educational, social, and career service programs launched through grant from Helios Education Foundation Nonprofit organization Genesis City 501c(3) founded Served as off-site alt school for MCRS, PUHSD and GUHSD Genesis Academy Alternative High School chartered through ASBCS Ground-breaking dropout intervention program launched at Phoenix College Genesis City celebrates 24 years of success 1997 1991 1993-1996 2008 2015

  4. 90% low to very low income • 98% minority • 99% behind one year or more in credits and/or one year or more behind grade level in reading and math • 15% teenage parents • 33% gang and/or juvenile justice system involvement • 24% work an average of 32 hours per week • 68% of Genesis Academy graduates are first generation high school graduates • 30% have been incarcerated or are on probation The Genesis Academy Student Profile

  7. Alliance for Excellent Education Study – over 27,600 Arizona high school students failed to graduate with their class in 2007. These figures do not include those students who do not continue past 8th grade. • Costs to society = weaker labor pool, lost income taxes, higher incarceration rate • $400,000+ in public assistance for each high school dropout • $2.2 million+ for career criminals or drug users • There is a direct tie between educational achievement and earnings potential; Arizona is losing out on fostering its human capital. Troubling Facts Regarding the Central Phoenix Corridor • 1 in 5 Hispanic students and 1 in 4 African American students are disengaged (not attending school or working) • 25% are below poverty line • Only 37% of 25+ year olds have high school diploma • Only 55% of 16 to 24 year olds in Central Phoenix are enrolled in school Dropout Problem in Arizona
