  4. ADVANCE PLACEMENT PROGRAM _________________ Solon High School’s Advanced Placement program is an opportunity for students to pursue college-level studies while still in secondary school. Through this program they may earn credit, advanced placement, or both, for college. Students who take AP courses learn a subject in depth, develop analytical reasoning skills, and form disciplined study habits that can contribute to continued success at the college level. POST SECONDARY ENROLLMENT OPTIONS (PSEO) _________________ This program has been established to permit high school students to take coursework at the high school and at a local college simultaneously. The program is intended to provide expanded opportunities for appropriately qualified high school students to experience coursework at the college or university level. Credit Flexibility _____________________________ For students to earn units of high school credit based on the demonstration of subject area competency. In addition to raising the expectations for graduation, lawmakers provided flexibility to students and educators to successfully meet these higher expectations. Flexibility Plan shifts focus from evaluating student learning based on seat time to assessing students’ demonstrated academic and skill level or performance. The plan does not eliminate Carnegie units or “seat time” requirements altogether. Rather, it retains seat time as one option and expands the number of options for earning credit by adding demonstration of subject area competency and structures. COLLEGE SUMMER PROGRAMMING allows qualifying students to take college coursework during the summer. OPTION A OPTION B HONORS PROGRAM Honors classes provide students with a more well-rounded education. They allow teachers the flexibility of going into depth in some areas, and of having students engage in growth activities – research, discussion, debate, group work, presentation, public speaking exercises, role plays and simulations, etc. AP classes don’t allow for as many of these things, as teachers must cover a greater amount of material.

  6. POST SECONDARY ENROLLMENT OPTIONS PROGRAM • Senate Bill 140 established a program permitting high school students to take course work at their high school and at a local college simultaneously. This Post Secondary Enrollment Options Program allows qualifying students to take a limited amount of college coursework as early as second semester of their freshman year in high school.

POST SECONDARY ENROLLMENT OPTIONS Dual Enrollment Guidelines • 9th through 12th grade students may enroll full or part-time for courses for high school and/or college credit if the following conditions are met: • Registration is completed during the previous school year. A student who is interested in participating must apply by March 22. • Student must first be accepted by the college, with the college generally giving priority to its regular college students before admitting high school students. • Students and parents or guardians must receive a thorough personal explanation of the program by the high school (which is tonight's program).

  9. Types of Post Secondary Enrollment Options Programs Students receive both college credit and high school credit. Under this option, the parent/student must pay tuition and fees as established by the college or university and they must pay for textbooks and other related materials. OPTION Student receives both college credit and high school credit. The cost of college tuition is absorbed by the college and individual high school. OPTION

Parent/Student Intent to Participate Form POST SECONDARY ENROLLMENT OPTIONS STEP By March of each year, the student and his/her parent must complete and submit the green “Intent to ParticipateForm” to his/her SHS counselor which signifies the student’s intent to participate in the program for the following school year. DUE MARCH 31, 2014

  12. POST SECONDARY ENROLLMENT OPTIONS Parent Information Form STEP • Parents must initial each section in the yellow four-page PSEO “Parent Information Form”. Submit this form to the SHS counselor. • DUE MARCH 31, 2014

POST SECONDARY ENROLLMENT OPTIONS College Acceptance STEP • Participation is contingent upon admission to the college. • Student and parent will meet with the high school counselor to finalize the decision to participate in PSEO. • Schedule changes will be made prior to the start of each semester for PSEO students to coordinate the college and high school course times.

Scheduling POST SECONDARY ENROLLMENT OPTIONS STEP 4 • Students who are awaiting acceptance should register for high school classes as if they were not participating in the program. • Schedule changes will then be made prior to the start of each semester for those students who receive notice of admission.

POST SECONDARY ENROLLMENT OPTIONS POTENTIAL RISKS & CONSEQUENCES • INCREASED RESPONSIBILITY FOR LEARNING: • Such work is more demanding that normal high school coursework, either in pace, content, or both. In a collegiate environment there is less support and structure provided for students. Also, the inconsistency among college curricula could affect the quality of instruction that students receive. • REDUCED OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARTICIPATION IN HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES/ATHLETICS: • Students may miss the many social, academic, sport and fine arts activities available to them on the high school campus. Also, athletic eligibility might be affected for students under Option B. • INCREASED FAMILY FINANCIAL OBLIGATIONS FOR EDUCATION: • Option A (i.e. tuition, fees, books, materials,inability to work)

POST SECONDARY ENROLLMENT OPTIONS POTENTIAL RISKS & CONSEQUENCES • POSSIBLE EFFECT ON GPA AND CLASS STANDING: The difference in academic competition among students in high school vs. college may have a negative effect on the high school student’s grade point average or college grade point average. Also, under Option B, the consequences of failing or not completing a required course might adversely affect the student’s ability to graduate with his /her class. • Failing a course or failure to complete the course, whether through formal “class drop” process or non-attendance, will result in any or all financial obligation for that course defaulting to the student and his/her parents. Student withdrawing from college classes will be subject to the rescheduling of a normal class load of 5 credits, and a “WD or “WF” will also be noted on the Solon High School transcript for dropped courses. • INCREASED TIME FOR TRAVEL: • Driving to and from the college, increased study requirements for college level courses, etc.

POST SECONDARY ENROLLMENT OPTIONS POTENTIAL BENEFITS • Expands the curriculum available to students. • Provides opportunities for “in-depth” study of those areas of special interest or need. • Allows students to earn college credit while in high school. • Provides financial support for taking college courses for high school credit. • Allows students to experience college-level work/life prior to making final decisions about whether and/or where to attend college.
