  3. scuttled • To sink (usually a ship) • In war, a captain of a ship might scuttle his vessel rather than have it captured and used by the enemy.

  4. reprehensible • Deserving blame or reprimand • Some think that kissing on the first date is reprehensible conduct.

  5. bemused • To confuse or bewilder • The teacher did not intend to bemuse the class with the vague instructions.

  6. reverently • To honor, to regard with respect • Nearly all Catholics revere the pope.

  7. appreciation • To increase the value • My home has appreciated in value by $10,000.

  8. aloof • Apart, indifferent • The woman remained aloof during the party, separating herself from everyone else.

  9. apprehension • To seize, arrest, take into custody • To understand or become aware of • Fortunately, the police apprehended the man who stole my TV.
