  3. Dynasties Rule China A Golden Age Begins The Tangcame to power and ruled China for almost 300 years. The Tangdynasty was a goldenage of political and cultural achievement. Its capital ,Chang´an ,was the world´slargestcity at the time. • Dynasty:is a series of rules from the samefamily. • Throughoutitslonghistory,China has beenruled by many differentdynasties. • The Sui ruled only until 618 ,but they united the north and south of China for the first time in centuries.

  4. The Grand Canal A Great Ruler The greatestruler of the dynasty was TangTaizong He began his militarycareer at the age of 16. TangTaizong was a master of calligraphy,the art of beutifulhandwriting. • One sources of China´seconomicstrenght was the Grand Canal ,which had beengreatly extended under the earlier Sui dynasty. • The grand Canal helpedjoinnorthern and southern China and madeitpossible to supply the capital.

  6. Changes in Goverment • The first capital of SongDynasty was located in Kaifeng ,After the Songlost control of regions to the north ,they moved the capital to Hangzhou. • The Song have the meritsystem • Underthissystem ,officials had to passtests and prove their ability to dod work

  7. Agriculture • During the SongDynasty ,new strains of rice and betterirrigationmethodshelpedpeansantsgrow more rice. • These two improvementsallowed farmers to produce two crops a yearinstead of one .

  8. Arts • Chinease rulerssupported many different formas of art ,incluidingmusic and poetry. • Songrulers also prizedgraceful art onjects, such as thosemade from porcelain.

KlubaiKlan ,mogol Ruler of China • Genghiskhan had conqueredall of northern China by 1215 • KublaiKhan to completed the conquest of China and to rule it. • KublaiKhancame to power in 1259. • The Mongolscentralizedgoverment,in China. • High goverment position were reserved for mongols and were evengiven to foreignersrather than to Chinese • The Mongols also kept their ownlanguage and customs

  12. A Country of island • Japanis an Archipelago ,or chain of many island . • The island of Japan were formed by volcanoes ,and earthquakes are common in the region. • The mountainsmaketraveling by land difficult,the sea hepled to protect Japan from invaders.

  13. An impressive capital • Heiamemperorsruled from a new capital Kyoto . • MostJapanesebuildings were wooden at the time,andfires were common.

The japanesenobility • Farmers ,fishers ,traders ,and builders were usually poor and spent their time doinghard work • The nobles believedtha the importance of their families and their position • Noblewomen were not affected by such rules because they could not holdofficial positions in the goverment. • Thiskind of economicsystem,inwhich poor people are legallybound to work for wealthylandowners, is called feudalism.

  15. Samuraiwarriors • Rich estate owners became so independent that they often disobeyed the emperor. • The nobles paidthesearmies to defend them, their estates ,and the peasantswho worked for them . The armies were made up of warriors called samurai.

  16. Japan and the outsideworld • In 1543 ,severalportugues e ship were blown off course and landed on Japann´s coast. • In the years that followed , a lively trade developedbetween East and West. Many Europeans traedears and missionaries made the longvoyage to these island , and thousands of Japaneseconverted to christianity .

The tokugawasunifyJapan • In 1603 ,tokugawaleyasu became shoguna • Leyasu was determined to bringorder to the country .To end the fighting among warringsumuraiband,leyasudividedJapan into about 250 regions. • To control these local leaders ,the Tokugawasrequiredeachdaimayo to live in the shougun´s capital Edo.
