  1. Josh Power Karyn Science Team Honey BadgerR.A.H.D. Critical Design Review Annie C+DH Zach Budget + Science C&DH Kyle Team Leader C+DH October 18, 2012 Jason Thermal + Structure Logan Thermal + Structure Gabe Thermal + Structure

  2. Mission Overview • Objectives: • Measure gamma radiation during ascent • Expecting to discover ionizing radiating increases as a function of altitude • Measure air quality during ascent • Expecting to discover air to have fewer dust particles per million • Record HD video • Spike interest of younger students in math, science, and engineering • Measure environmental factors • Temperature, pressure, humidity • Collect acceleration engineering data • Meet all RFP requirements • Why? • Public outreach • Verify that atmosphere is necessary for radiation dampening

  3. Requirements Flow Down (cont.)

  4. Design • How? • Gamma radiation - Geiger counter • Dust particle concentration – Optical dust sensor • HD video – GoPro HD Hero • Temperature – Thermometer • Humidity – Humidity sensor • Pressure – Pressure sensor • (x,y,z) orientation – Accelerometer

  5. Design Drawing

  6. Functional Block Diagram

  7. Budget • Total mass: 781.9 g (0.782 kg) • Total cost: $317.91

  8. Schedule

  9. Test Plan 10-31-12 • Drop test • Drop foam core prototype from 5m • Cold temperature test • Cooler of dry ice with heater on and thermometer • Whip test • Swing foam core prototype with internal mass representations around violently • 11-7-12 • Subsystem functionality test • Test functionality of all subsystems with visual representation that data is being obtained and recorded • Geiger counter - Professor Wagner’s help • Optical Dust Sensor – put dust in air

  10. What We’re Expecting ppm ppm psi t t t Dust Sensor Geiger Counter Pressure Sensor °C °C % t t t External Temp Internal Temp Humidity

  11. Biggest Worries • Total failure • Air getting through our optical dust sensor without getting too cold to function • Miscommunication between subsystems
