NHS Employers survey: medical revalidation • You told us the top 5 barriers that are preventing you from implementing revalidation are: • Clarity around the process, what is required, national guidance awaited • IT support systems to gather evidence and record outcomes • Capacity/resources • Information requirements (what to collect, supporting information, multi source feedback) • Appraisal (maintaining high quality appraisal, sufficient trained appraisers, quality assurance) :

Revalidation • What employers can do now • GMC publishing supporting information and GMP Framework guidance documents – a key development. • Integrate guidance into local appraisal processes. • Ensure all doctors have access to whole practice appraisal. • Ensure quality of appraisal process – training of appraisers for example • Ensure there are processes in place to deal with concerns about doctors

Revalidation • What’s on the horizon.. • Ensure recommendation process for Responsible Officers which: • - delivers a recommendation on individual doctors to the GMC • - is quality assured • Test of readiness in Summer 2012 • Once revalidation is in place – contributing to quality assurance process.

  8. The Revalidation Support Team’s role • to work in partnership with the Department of Health, the GMC and Designated Bodies to deliver an effective system of revalidation for doctors in England. www.revalidationsupport.nhs.uk

  11. Pathfinder pilots • Completed 3100 appraisals in 10 sites across England March 31 2011 • Evaluation due July 2011 • Will inform Organisational Readiness, Medical Appraisal Framework and testing and piloting work www.revalidationsupport.nhs.uk

  12. What is RST doing for employers? • Mainly Organisational Readiness: to prepare healthcare systems and designated bodies in England for their role in delivering revalidation for doctors through appropriate training, guidance and tools. www.revalidationsupport.nhs.uk

Medical Appraisal Framework (MAF)It’s relationships and provenance • Strengthening Medical Appraisal (SMA) • a major revision, informed by Pathfinder pilot • need for simplification • need for clarity • GMC documents on Supporting Information and GMP framework for revalidation • These provide policy and principles • MAF will provide practical guidance

Appraisal for Revalidation within MAF • Aimed to provide support and challenge through a formative review of a doctor’s practice and their professional approach • The appraiser must be sufficiently informed by this review to establish if there are any significant concerns (the summative part) • Performance management of issues solely to do with employment contract will not be undertaken – in hospitals this will be done through job planning

The parts of Appraisal • Scope of practice and general information • Continuing learning • Review of practice • A connection with clinical governance systems • Complaints, incidents, etc • Patient and colleague feedback • Health and probity statements • The output of appraisal – PDP and appraiser statement.
