  17. PANTON HILL - HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION POLICY • Rationale: • The Health & Physical Education program promotes lifelong participation in physical activity through the development of attitudes, skills and movement competence. The program helps young people learn about factors, including nutrition, that promote and protect the physical, social and emotional health of individuals, and they learn to identify harms associated with particular situations and behaviours, and how to take action to minimise these harms. • Aims: • • Health & Physical Education encourages students to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours that enable them to: • • maintain good health and live a healthy lifestyle • • understand the role of physical activity in ensuring good health • • engage in physical activity • Implementation: • The Health & Physical Education domain is an essential component of the Physical, Personal and Social Learning strand of the Victorian Essential Learning Standards. • All students at our school will study a sequential Health & Physical Education course based upon the learning focus statements contained within the Victorian Essential Learning Standards. • All teachers will be provided with a personal copy of the VCAA ‘Flagship Strategy 1 – Student Learning – February 2006’ DVD and physical education specialist staff are required to work with their respective teams, sections or faculties to develop and implement a joint Health & Physical Education course for all students. • Appointed physical education staff will provide a sequential Physical Education skills and sporting program for all students. Example – Inserting criteria into other policies

  18. Example – Inserting criteria into other policies • Continued… • Implementation: • Play equipment that encourages physical activity is made available to all students at lunchtimes and recess. • Student progress in both dimensions of Health and Physical Education will be reported in half and end of year academic reports. • Learning opportunities must be provided that cater for the identified needs of each student. • Students in P-3 will be timetabled for daily 20-30 minutes physical education sessions, while students in 4-6 will be timetabled for 3 hours per week including a maximum of 90 minutes for sport, the balance dedicated to physical education. • Budgets that provide for the needs of both the Health and Physical Education programs will be developed by staff and resourced by school council. • Water is encouraged to be consumed during physical activity. • The Physical Education coordinator will be responsible for coordinating the school’s athletic, swimming, cross country and inter-school sports programs. • The school will promote walking or riding to school through a whole-of-school activity at least one day per term. i.e. Walk to School, Ride to School day. • Families are informed of the health and physical education policy and are provided with information to meet this policy requirement through displays, newsletter articles and other promotional material

  19. Example – Inserting criteria into other policies • PANTON HILL PRIMARY SCHOOL - HEALTHY FOODS POLICY • Rationale: • Healthy nutritional habits are essential to the growth and development of children • Aims: • To develop within students an informed appreciation of healthy eating habits • To ensure that any foods provided by the school are consistent with a healthy eating philosophy • Implementation: • The development of an appreciation of healthy foods and healthy eating habits form part of our Health Promoting School strategy. • Lessons relating to healthy foods and healthy eating will form part of each child’s annual Health & Physical Education curriculum studies. • The school will involve itself in local strategies designed to raise an awareness of, or to promote healthy foods eg: local fruit growing promotions. • The Panton Hill General Store, providing the school’s lunch orders, will promote a good selection of nutritious, tasty and attractive foods consistent with the ‘Dietary Guidelines for Children and Adolescents – 1995.” • The local shop providing the school’s lunch orders will not include soft drinks or lollies in lunch orders and crisps and fried foods will be supplied no more than twice per term.  School community members are encouraged not to bring these items to school. • Staff members will be encouraged to model healthy eating habits whilst at school and not to use sweets as rewards.

  20. Example – Inserting criteria into other policies • Continued……. • Implementation: • Families are informed of the healthy eating policy and are provided with information to meet this policy requirement through displays, newsletter articles and other promotional material • Healthy foods and drinks will be available to all students at activities such as sporting events. • The principal will ensure that a supply of drinkable water is available at the school at all times. • At least once per year the whole school will focus upon a theme of healthy foods. • Students will have access to their own water bottles during class lessons, and have a fruit break in the afternoons. • Students will participate in State and Federal Government Free Fruit Fridays Programs. • Fund raising activities will not focus on the promotion of unhealthy foods that do not complement our healthy foods philosophy eg: NO chocolate drives. • Staff are to inform the principal of students who appear to be provided with inadequate lunches. Healthy sandwiches provided if students turn up without lunch / snacks. • The Healthy Foods Program will include reference to the following programs where relevant: Life Ed, Go For Your Life, ISeven, Jump Rope For Heart etc.
