  1. Which Smart Phone? A Comparison (slightly biased) Original Author: John Hanks: john.hanks@outlook.com

  2. 4 Basic Platforms • Android • Apple iPhone with iOS • BlackBerry 10 • Windows Phone • No Smart Phone is perfect for everybody • Each platform has flaws and bright spots, just be aware of the differences • Try to determine what features are most important to you, phone functions, Email and Productivity, photography, communications, music, games, watching videos, etc.

  3. Good Things Android Apple iOS Easy to use Very little fragmentation Limited choices Hundreds of Thousands of Apps Some Customization options Camera is very good, maybe best Voice Commands very good • Variety of choices • Open Platform • Free to use by any vendor • Flexible, powerful possibilities • Hundreds of Thousands of Apps • Most Customizable • Some models have good camera • Voice Commands very good BlackBerry 10 Windows Phone • Easy to use after learning period • Most modern and smooth • Limited choices • Security is not an afterthought • Flexible, powerful possibilities • Hundreds of Thousands of Apps • Many Customizable options • Can run most Android apps directly • MicroSD Card for expandable Storage • Easy to use • Limited choices • Limited possibilities • Thousands of Apps • Few Customization options • Some models have Great Camera

  4. Bad Things Android Apple iOS Easy to use, limited on purpose Limited choices No need to think, Apple does it for you. Limited Customization options to what Apple thinks you need Slow to implement features others have for years Form over function is the design goal No expandable storage • Variety of choices, confusing • A lot harder to learn at first • Open Platform, can be hacked • Every vendor changes it • Flexible, but some features still missing, inconsistent, confusing • Most Customizable, takes time to get it working well • Google tracking you and many advertisements and lack of privacy Windows Phone BlackBerry 10 • Easy to use, fairly limited features • Limited choices • Thousands of Apps • Few Customization options • Mostly no expandable storage • A little harder to learn at first • Limited choices • Flexible, powerful, many features • Many Apps are Android • Camera is good, not the best

  5. Best for what type of person Android Apple iOS Technology Simpleton Follow the crowd Have special needs only met by iPhone, particular apps, etc. Like to pay extra for everything, including ringtones Like Soviet Union type Control over your phone and what you do on your device • Gadget or Technology geek, likes to play with your phone for hours • Don’t care what you have, just listen to inexperienced sales person • Frugal, some phones are “free” • Not concerned about privacy BlackBerry 10 Windows Phone • Technology Simpleton • Have specific Camera preferences • Loves Xbox integration • Don’t want many apps • Don’t care to access the file system • Care about being productive and efficient and organized • Value Security and Privacy • Want the best phone for communications • Want the best keyboard available

  6. Notes on Android • Google is an Advertising Company. Everything they do is aimed at tracking you so they can market to you. • Android is very lacking in security and privacy, can be easily hacked • For example, you can download a balloon popping game that can read your contact list and upload it without you knowing and without warning • Almost all Android phones are bastardized by the company selling the phone • Many of the features are very gimmicky and not very useful. • Bland, confusing, ugly design of operating system, like 10 different people designed it, but never talked to each other • Google does provide some very useful features and apps

  7. Notes on Apple iOS • They rely on Apps to cover for the lack of features in the Operating System • The whole premise of iOS is that it’s simple to use. That’s fine, except that it also puts severe limits on what you can do • Try to attach a PDF or Doc or Excel file to an Email. You can’t. That’s the type of limits it has. • Money MoneyMoney: control your purchases so that they make money, even on things like ringtones • New version looks like a kids Fisher Price toy • Love to get you locked into the ecosystem, makes it hard to leave

  8. Notes on BlackBerry • BlackBerry is not going out of business, contrary to lemming reporters • Zero Debt and 3 Billion in the bank and Best Security for Government and Anybody that needs security and likes privacy, • http://n4bb.com/blackberrys-u-s-market-share-keeps-sliding-somehow-still-3rd-place-according-comscore/ • They just got an infusion of cash and already had 3 billion in the bank. • The quality of the phones is still higher than most Android and on par with the iPhone • The Z10 and Q10 are a good size, the Z30 is a bit too large for some, but loved by many. • BBOS 10 was lacking when it came out, but in 1 year, they have added features that took Android and iOS many years (and many still aren’t there) • BB10 is designed to Share things and communicate and make your phone life easier and safe/private • Government and companies rely on the superior security of BlackBerry • Best and fastest Browser, most compatible with the internet

  9. Notes on Windows Phone • Very basic features, very new • Trying to be the same Windows on Tablets and Computers and Phones • Very lacking in Apps • Big bright blocks intended to catch the eye of consumers • Some of the Nokia models are huge and have very a good camera

  10. Some Windows Phone Issues • Notifications are nearly useless • No visible file system - this is a major impediment to getting real work done. • No real multitasking - constantly waiting for apps to start/re-start and nearly nothing can get done in the background. • Locked down MIME system - no one is allowed to write 3rd party replacements for the browser, keyboard, image handling, media playback, etc. • Slow pace of innovation - promises and more promises, but slow delivery of things people need.

  12. BlackBerry 10 Best Browser Fastest by far Most Compatible with HTML5

  13. Things others have written about BB10 • I personally like the approach that Blackberry adopted to run Android Apps. It's really taking the cream, discard the crap. It builds an unified world for Both Blackberry Native and Android apps to co-exists in a safer way.I personally like many Android apps, but do not like using an Android phone as daily driver, because security/privacy concern. One bad app could break up the whole system or leak all your personal data. With Blackberry 10, World peace is strictly protected, within the Personal space it allows you to run Android Apps, but each Android app is only allowed to run in a sandbox. It's not perfect, but it's more secure. • Best phone I've ever had! :), February 4, 2014 • A great phone for work and some play., January 26, 2014 • Great phone that is not promoted well • The Blackberry Z30 will blow your iPhone and Galaxy out the water Age:25 to 34 Gender: Female The Blackberry Z30 runs so smooth, very good call quality, very easy to use and the battery life is amazing! I've have the Galaxy S4 and the iPhone 4S and I'm glad i switch to the blackberry... Best phone i've had in a long time! Definitely would recommend it to anybody that wants a good quality phone! • There Is None Better Age:65 or over Gender: Male Upgraded from the Z10 and I'm in heaven. This is the most complete operating system out there today. The simplicity of the system is a joy to work with. It makes even the unorganized organized. Beautiful build quality and the sound is unbelievable. Highly recommend!

  14. Z10 and Z30 Review Scores Verizon Z10 and Z30

  15. Feature Comparison Guestimate Example guess of features and limitations Android: 1000 features, 60% work as expected, 20% limited. Relies upon many additional apps to fill in the gaps Apple iOS: 500 features, 90% work as expected, 60% limited. Relies upon many additional apps to fill in the gaps BlackBerry 10: 800 features, 75% work as expected, 20% limited and requires some apps to fill in the gaps Windows Phone: 400 features, 80% work as expected, 50% limited. Relies upon many additional apps to fill in the gaps, but there aren’t many apps available. BlackBerry 6 & 7: 1500 features fine tuned over 10 years, 85% work as expected, 15% limited. Some apps needed

  16. Summary / Conclusion • Every Smartphone has bugs and problems • Some have less issues, but none are problem-free • Android: Very flexible, but Privacy is major concern and every brand is different , every carrier loads crap on • Apple iPhone: Not very flexible, but generally reliable • BlackBerry 10: Flexible and modern and good privacy, can run most Android apps to fill In the gaps, but still new to the market and continuing to add new features and fix bugs. In one year has done what took others five years. • BlackBerry 10and Android may need help from a tech person to help make things work the best • Windows Phone: Not very flexible, limited features

  17. Why I choose BlackBerry • Apple’s control and limits on the iPhone is too frustrating. • Android can be made to work, but Google is an evil marketing company and I don’t like constant advertising everywhere. • Windows Phone is too limited and simple • That leaves BlackBerry, a good mix of features, efficiency, security, privacy and allows me to just get things done in a flexible way.
