  1. Data Overview By Amy Nguyen and Julianne Surrency Summer 2013 Dr.Wright

  2. Background Information New Life Academy of Excellence (NLAE) 3rd grade : • In 2009, there were 38 third grade students in the Fall, but by the Spring, eight students left the school leaving 30 students to complete the school year. • In 2010, there were 42 third grade students in the Fall, but by the Spring, two students left the school leaving 40 students to complete the school year. • In 2011, there were 40 third grade students in the Fall and the Spring.

  3. Purpose • The purpose of this data overview is to analyze the third grade performance from the 2008-2009 school year through the 2010-2011 school year. • Through the analysis of the Georgia Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT) data, we are better able to identify the strengths and weakness of our school’s third grade students. • In this overview, NLAE and the state of Georgia tests results were analyzed in the content areas of English/Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, and Reading as well as by student enrollment. • Specifically, we were interested in a comparison of female student performance to male student performance on the Spring assessment, since the demographics of our school were not varied enough for other subgroup analysis at this time. • In this data analysis, we use the term proficient to describe meeting and exceeding the standards and does not meet for the description of students who did not pass the CRCT.

  6. Does Not Meet Rate of Males & Females in ELA

  7. Overall 3rd Grade Performance in ELA

  8. Proficiency of Males & Females in Math

  9. Does Not Meet Rate of Males & Females in Math

  10. Overall 3rd Grade Performance in Math

  11. Proficiency of Males and Females in Reading

  12. Does Not Meet of Males and Females in Reading

  13. Overall 3rd Grade Performance in Reading

  14. New Life Academy of Excellence: 3rd Grade Overall Performance Strengths: • In Math and ELA, the proficiency rate in three years has always been greater than students who did not meet expectations. • By year 2011, all students were proficient in Reading. Weaknesses: • By 2010, all students were proficient in ELA. However, in 2011 there were student who performed below the proficiency level. • In 2010 the Math proficiency level increased significantly, but by 2011 the number of students who performed below the proficiency level increased.

  15. Georgia 3rd Graders vs. NLAE 3rd Graders

  16. GA 3rd Graders vs. NLAE 3rd Graders • Two out of the three years, NLAE outperformed the state in Reading and ELA. • One hundred percent of the time, NLAE outperformed and had a lower number of students that did not meet than the state did in mathematics. • NLAE has had a lower number of students that did not meet than the state in all of the three years compared. • NLAE’s exceeds rate in Reading, ELA, and in Math are all higher two out of the three years in comparison to the state’s exceeds rate in those subjects.

  17. Summary & Reflection • Out of the three years analyzed, NLAE students performed their best in the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 school years. • As the years passed, the student performance in Reading, ELA, and in Math, consistently improved for all third grade students at NLAE and throughout the state. • The performance of female students was higher than the performance of male students in both Reading and in ELA. • In reading, female students out performed the males in all three school years. • To increase school achievement, improvement in mathematics should be a focus for both the male and female populations.

  18. Discussion • In two of the three school years analyzed, more females than males were enrolled, possibly explaining why female students have more frequently outperformed male students at NLAE. • There were fewer female students enrolled in the state than males, but they still managed to outperform the males in the state. • Reflecting state results, females outperformed males in Georgia and at NLAE. • Over the course of three years, male enrollment increased. • When more females were enrolled, the male performance also increased. • Overall, NLAE performs exceptionally well in the ELA and Reading content areas.
