  2. Outcome • IS1 Students will be expected to engage in specific research using the historical method and communicate the findings of their research effectively.

  3. Steps to the Big Question • Organize • Reflect • Ask • Read • Research • Critical Thinking • Choose Format • Answer • Works Cited

  4. Step 1: Organize • Your folder = your friend • Logistical information inside your folder • Where you will keep your folder • What should go in your folder • When you will use your folder • Assessment of your folder

  5. Step 2: Reflect • What we do when we reflect • Reflect on what you are being asked • Consider how you will do this task • What sorts of questions do you think you will ask as we move through the units • What could be barriers to your success • Do you have any fears or concerns • What are you looking forward to in this process

  6. Step 3: Ask • Look over the outcomes for the unit • What do you want to know that I may not get to • A good question does not have a solid answer – yes, no, 42, blue, General Currie… • A good question does not have words you do not understand • A good question is your question • A good question requires you to think • A good question asks you to learn, and makes you want to…

  7. Step 4: Read • Use tech, books, magazine, pictures… any form of texts to read about your topic • Read anything • Read everything • Nothing gets selected out

  8. Step 5: Research • Use a jot note format • Write down key information • Usually pieces of information or opinion that if it was missing would mess up understanding • I will give you jot note formats or you can use lose leaf

  9. Step 6: Critical Thinking • What information seems good • What information is garbage • What do you think about the issue • Nothing happens in a bubble • Historical judgment – hindsight is 20/20

  10. Step 7: Choose Format • How can you best answer the question • Glog, website, PPT, looseleaf, essay, video reflection, interpretive dance?

  11. Step 8: Answer • Answer your question

  12. Works Cited • Bibliography – APA Formatting • Memorial University • Bibme
