  2. Life Before the Shoe We have no shoes. • Little is known. • Early foot bones show stronger toes. • During the Ice Age • 40,000 to 100,000 I know. Cavemen before the shoe.

  3. The Best Day Ever We‘re happy now! I know. Cavemen after the shoe.

  4. The First Shoe • End of Ice Age drawings show shoes. • Worn to protect from harsh climates. • Frozen caveman found wearing shoes. • 10,000 years old at least. • Spain and France= many cavemen with shoes. • Have up to 5,000 year old shoes. The 5,000 year-old shoe.

  5. Shoes After the First • Every one has worn shoes since. • Mesopotamia = Mountain shoes made of wraparound leather. • Mostly sandals for many years. • Greece = aristocratic women many pairs. • Ancient Egypt = shoes showed rank. • Upper class had sandals with pointed toes.

The first caveman shoe was found. 5,000 years ago The first REAL shoes are worn by Mesopotamian mountain people. !600-1200B.C. January 24,1899 Rubber soles are invented by Humphrey O’Sullivan. Major shoe marketing begins! 1949

  8. Why Shoelaces are so Great • They let shoes fit multiple foot sizes. • They make shoes very stylish. • They help people learn to tie knots. • They existed in 3000 B.C. • Fibers that undo but, look better. • They can be tied however we want!

The Shoe’s Best Friend • Made for feet warmth- lots like shoes. • Earliest- animal skins- worn to ankles. • Greeks- matted hair socks. • Romans- leather or woven fabrics. • 1000 A.D. socks=wealth symbol for nobles. • Sock knitting machine- 1949 • Nowadays-nylon socks, very stylin’ and comfy. A pair of the shoe’s best friend.

  11. Wedding Traditions? • In west- father throws shoes at couple. • That signifies the change of authority. • Anglo Saxon Weddings-bride gives groom her shoes. Very happy weddings.

  12. Classic Shoe Tales I’m the shoemaker! • The Elves and the Shoemaker. • The Old Woman Who Lived in the Shoe. • Cinderella The Elves and the Shoemaker.

  13. How Would Life be Without the Shoe? • Very sad. • Peoples feet would be hurt more. • They would also be stronger. • No more stylish footwear. • We’d be more like hobbits. This would be us.

  14. Shoes of the Future! • There is much speculation. • Electronic • Flying? • Comfortable • Easy to walk in. An electronic soon-to-be-future shoe.
