  1. The Declaration of Israeli Independence By Sam Rosenfield with help from Lydia Lane and Cecily Rosenhan

  2. The Declaration of Independence • A Jewish nation was formed in Israel. This nation had a Jewish religion and culture, and gave the world the Torah. • When the Romans exiled the Jewish people out of their historical homeland, they had to live in other countries, but still prayed and hoped to go back to Israel as free people. • One day after WWII, they returned as newcomers. They built cities and towns, they revived the Hebrew language and created a community to live in peace and security. • In 1897, the Israel congress, with Theodor Herzelas their leader, declared that the Jewish people have a right to live in their historical homeland. • In 1917, the British Balfour Declaration declared that there was a connection between the Jewish people and Israel, and that they deserve to rebuild their old home.

  3. After the Holocaust, when 6,000,000 Jews were killed by the Nazis, it was proved that the Jews needed their homeland back. Many Jewish survivors started going back. • On November 29, 1947 the U.N. decided the Jews should have an independent country and that it would be called Israel. • The British Mandate ended and Israel was declared independent. • The state of Israel became open to Jewish immigration, and the country was built to make sure there waspeace, justice, and equal rights to all citizens. • The Jewish people were to respect all religious places. Israel cooperated with all the other nations and helped build the country. They also called on the Arab people, who remained, to live in peace together. • They gave their hands in peace to all of the neighboring countries, and wanted to help in advancing life in the Middle East. • They called on all the Jewish people from all over the world to rebuild the country and fulfill the dream of the generations for the redemption of Israel. • With confidence in the power of Israel, they signed as witnesses, The Declaration of Independence in their land in the city of Tel Aviv.
