  1. Recognizing Symbolism and Allegory • (1 minute alone)Think about the meaning of chapter 4’s title: “Painted Faces and Long Hair”. What does it symbolize? • (2 min. partners) Discuss the significance + be ready to share out.

  2. POSSIBLE ANSWERS (DO NOT COPY): Painted - hidden identity masking the truth Faces – our real selves our natural state of man Long – things gone unkempt represented the passage of time Hair – natural state Long hair – a barbaric, primitive, wild, chaotic state

TAKE NOTES: (make a 4 square) In box #1 Divide in 2 parts: symbol + allegory • What’s a symbol? • An ordinary object, event, person, or place to which we attach an extraordinary meaning/significance 2. What’s an allegory? • a story in which characters, settings, and actions stand for something beyond themselves • has two levels of meaning: the literal (obvious), and the symbolic/figurative. • overall purpose = teach a moral lesson • TIP: circle that word ALL in the word ALLegoryto remember that it’s all the book/story in its entirety that is a symbolic, therefore an allegory

LOTF is itself a symbol; an allegorical tale works on many different levels, thus, reader interpretation of these symbols is of great importance. • Label box 2= object • box 3 = person • box 4= event • box 5= place • box 6 = choice • Divide all boxes 2-8 into 4 sections: “Q” (#), CM, Literal, Figurative

  6. Symbolism Assignment • Quotes must be cited properly. (can you find more than 1 per symbol?) • CM= (complete sentences) For each symbol, explain its meaning by using this frame: ___ represents ____ because ____. • Literal: on the surface meaning • Figurative: under the surface meaning • HOMEWORK: Complete boxes 1-6 in correct colors.
