Middle School VS High School • Increased student responsibility, self-advocacy & communication with teachers • Homework counts! • Agenda use • Course credits required for grade-level promotion • Ex: Must pass a minimum of 5 freshmen classes for promotion to 10th grade • SOLs are a requirement for graduation

  5. Graduation Requirements *One must be a fine art or CTE **Must include 2 sequential electives

Graduation Requirements Continued • Students must complete one virtual course • For students earning a STANDARD diploma, they must earn an approved career and technical education credential • Requirement (began in 2016-2017) for training in emergency first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and the use of automated external defibrillators, including hands-on practice of the skills necessary to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation

Verified Credits • A VERIFIED UNIT OF CREDIT IS A PASSED COURSE WITH THE CORRESPONDING PASSED STANDARDS OF LEARNING TEST • World History/Geo.1 • World History/Geo. 2 • US & VA History • English- Reading • English- Writing • Algebra 1 • Geometry • Algebra 2 • Earth Science • Biology • Chemistry

Schedule • English 9 (Academic or Honors) • Math (varies depending on course) • Social Studies (WH/Geo 1 or Pre-AP World History) • Science (Earth Science Academic, Research Earth Science, Research Biology (dependent on math)) • World Language (next level course progression) IF not continuing, select an elective • Health and PE 9 (Req. for Graduation) • Elective • NOTE: teachers will recommend next level for core courses and world language

  11. Science Course Selection Guidelines Potomac Falls High School2018-2019 Edition • Research Earth Science • Requires advanced academic skills. • Good writing skills are necessary. Students will perform some numerical analysis, and preferably have completed Algebra I before enrolling. • Research students should have already shown a strong interest in science. • The successful research student will be a self-starter that requires little prompting to complete assignments. • Research Biology • Recommended only for students who can schedule long-term project work around their busy lives. • Recommend that student earn at least a “B” in Research Earth Science and score at least 450 on the SOL. • Good writing skills are necessary. Students should be able to comprehend abstract concepts, analyze data, and draw conclusions. • Student must be able to work independently and manage out of class assignments. • Research students should have already shown a strong interest in science. • Highly recommended that student be enrolled in Algebra II.Strong math skills necessary to complete statistical analyses of data.

Course Request Changes • Any change request MUST be received with PARENT SIGNATURE. • Requests for CHANGES are due NO LATER THAN March 23, 2018 to your counselor, Ms. Robinson, at RBMS. • REVIEW course requests and the program of studies carefully. • Log in to PARENTVUE/STUDENTVUE to view current course requests.
