In parallel-flow heat exchangers, the fluids enter the exchanger at an equivalent end, and travel in parallel to at least one another to the opposite side. In counter-flow heat exchangers the fluids enter the exchanger from opposite ends. For efficiency, heat exchangers are designed to maximize the area of the wall between the 2 fluids, while minimizing resistance to fluid flow through the exchanger.
