  1. Warm-up Question What do you already know about the scientific method?

  2. Scientific Method and Experimental Design • September 6 2011, Western Sierra

  3. Daily Objectives Define independent, dependent, and controlled variables, and identify them within a question or hypothesis. Part 2: Create a scatterplot from data, and use a best-fit line or curve to analyze the accuracy of individual data points.

  4. Scientific Method Question ex: Why does my cat like to eat spiders? Hypothesis Shows cause and effect. Use the phrasing, “If _____, then _____.” or “_____ because _____.” This shows cause and effect. Is testable.

  5. Scientific Method Independent variable – the cause – we change it around ex: How much we make the spider move. Dependent variable – the effect – we measure what happens ex: The percent chance my cat will eat it. Controlled variables – everything else stays the same. ex: Object size, object appearance, object smell, time of day hungriness of cat, room lighting, how long the cat sees it.

  6. Group Practice In your own words, discuss what independent, dependent, and controlled variables are. How are they different from each other? Be prepared to share your discussion with the class.

  7. A person asks, “Are all brands of potato chips equally greasy?” What is the independent variable? • Grease • Number of chips • Testing method • Potato chip brand • Flavor • None of the above

  8. A person predicts, “If I don’t eat breakfast, then I’ll be grouchy later.”What is a controlled variable? • Breakfast or not • Mood later • Events during the day • Exercise • Both 3 and 4 • None of the above
