  11. Confession of Sin God of all grace, you love us, but we have not loved you. You call, but we have not listened. We walk away from neighbors in need, wrapped up in our own concerns. By our actions and our attitudes we praise what you condemn. Help us to admit our sin, so that as you come to us in mercy we may repent, turn to you and receive forgiveness and the power to walk in renewed faith; through Jesus Christ our Redeemer. Amen.

  16. S Sermon on the Mount

  17. Matthew 7:13-27 13 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy[a] that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few. 15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. 18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit.

  18. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus you will recognize them by their fruits. 21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’

  19. 24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

  20. When it comes to matters of faith we had better listen to Jesus because Jesus knows what is really real.

  21. The Absolute Truth from Jesus

  22. How are we to UNDERSTAND the gospel? (vv.13-20)

  23. The Deadly Paths (vv. 13-14)

  24. …there are according to Jesus only 2 ways, hard and easy (there is no middle way), entered by 2 gates broad and narrow (there is no other gate), trodden by 2 crowds, large and small (there is no neutral group), ending in 2 destinations, destruction and life (there is no third alternative.) it is hardly necessary to comment that such talk is extremely unfashionable today. People like to be uncommitted.

  25. Every opinion poll allows not only a “yes” or “no” answer, but for a convenient “I don’t know.” To deviate from the middle way is to risk being dubbed an “extremist” or a “fanatic.” Everybody resents being faced with the necessity of a choice. But Jesus will not allow us to escape it. John Stott

  26. The False Prophets (vv.15-20)

  27. …It is surely not an accident that Jesus’ warning about false prophets in the Sermon on the Mount immediately follows his teaching about 2 gates, ways, crowds, destinations. For false prophets are adept at blurring the issue of salvation. Some so muddle or distort the gospel that they make it hard for seekers to find the narrow gate. Others try to make out that the narrow way is in reality much broader than Jesus implied, and that to walk it requires little if any restriction on one’s belief or behavior.

  28. …Yet others, perhaps the most pernicious of all, dare to contradict Jesus and to assert that the broad road does not lead to destruction, but that as a matter of fact all roads lead to God, and that even the broad and the narrow roads, although they lead in opposite directions, ultimately both end in life.

  29. Without the sinless sacrifice of Jesus Christ, all we have to rely on for entrance into heaven is our own merit. So without the sacrifice of Jesus, no one would end up in heaven. This claim that sounds so exclusive, so restrictive, so dogmatic, is the clear teaching of the New Testament, and it’s been the position of the Christian community for 2000 years now.

  30. Buddha might have been an enlightened teacher, but he can’t save people from sin. Muhammad may have inspired people, Moses might have led a nation out of slavery, Ghandi might have helped India find freedom through non-violent resistance, but Muhammad, Moses, and Ghandi CANNOT SAVE PEOPLE. Pas. Timothy Peck

  31. How are we to LIVE the gospel? (vv.13-20)

  32. The Deceived Followers (vv.21-23)

  33. This is “a warning to people who think they are saved but do not live in obedience to God. Unlike preachers today who avoid upsetting someone’s assurance, our Lord was determined to destroy hope of all who falsely thought they were redeemed. He often challenged such people. He never encouraged someone who was unsure of salvation to ignore doubts.

  34. Doubts about one’s salvation are not wrong do long as they are not nursed and allowed to become an obsession. Scripture encourages self-examination. Doubts must be confronted and dealt with honestly and biblically.” Dr. John MacArthur

  35. The Sandy Foundations (vv.24-27)

  36. Scripture Reading 2 Peter 1:16-2:9 16 For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,” 18 we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain.

  37. Scripture Reading 2 Peter 1:16-2:9 19 And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, 20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

  38. Scripture Reading 2 Peter 1:16-2:9 2But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. 2 And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. 3 And in their greed they will exploit you with false words.  Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

  39. Scripture Reading 2 Peter 1:16-2:9 3 And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. Their condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep. 4For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chainsof gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment; 5if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly;

  40. Scripture Reading 2 Peter 1:16-2:9 5 if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; 6if by turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them to extinction, making them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly;

  41. Scripture Reading 2 Peter 1:16-2:9 7 and if he rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked 8 (for as that righteous man lived among them day after day, he was tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and heard); 9 then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment. . .
