Mathematics Standards PROBLEM SOLVING MULTIPLE REPRESENTATIONS NUMBER SENSE CONCEPTS:Students will communicate number sense concepts using multiple representations to reason, solve problems, and make connections within mathematics and across disciplines. GEOMETRIC CONCEPTS AND MEASUREMENT CONCEPTS: Students will communicate geometric concepts and measurement concepts using multiple representations to reason,solve problems and make connections within mathematics and across disciplines. ALGEBRAIC CONCEPTS: Students will communicate algebraic concepts using multiple representations to reason,solve problems and make connections within mathematics and across disciplines. CONNECTIONS DATA ANALYSIS/PROBABILITY CONCEPTS: Students will communicate data analysis/probability concepts using multiple representations to reason,solve problems and make connections within mathematics and across disciplines. COMMUNICATION REASONING

Vertical Format of Standards Nebraska Mathematics Standards Kindergarten MA 0.1 Students will communicate number sense concepts using multiple representations to reason, solve problems, and make connections within mathematics and across disciplines. MA 0.1.1 Number System: Students will demonstrate, represent, and show relationships among whole numbers within the base-ten number system. MA 0.1.1.a Count, read and write numbers 0 – 20 MA 0.1.1.b Count objects using one-to-one correspondence 0 - 20 MA 0.1.1.c Sequence objects using ordinal numbers (1st through 5th) MA 0.1.1.d Match numerals to the quantities they represent 0-20, using a variety of models and representations

Common Core Standards • Common Core Math standards released in June 2010 • Revised NE standards set expectations for High School to include Advanced Algebra topics • Common Core goes beyond Algebra with about 50 STEM denoted standards and another 40 which are focused on formal geometry constructions and mathematical proofs • ALL states encouraged to adopt • http://corestandards.org/the-standards

What is known about NeSA-M? • Grades 3-8 and 11 • Concepts Tested: • Number sense • Geometric/Measurement • Algebraic • Data Analysis/Probability • Scheduling Options: • March 28 – May 6, 2011 • 2 consecutive days • 2 days in the same week • 1 day with scheduled break • Make-up tests must be administered • No time limit

What is known about NeSA-M? • Items: • 50 multiple choice items (with 4 options) • Plus embedded items: total 60-70 items • Mode: • Online or paper/pencil • Decision was to be made by October • Calculators? • No…unless specified on IEP • Reference sheet provided online or as insert in text booklet • Scratch paper and graph paper are allowed • Proficiency Levels: • Three • Cut Scores/Reporting • Summer 2011 • Students not tested in the testing window cannot be considered participants and will receive zero scores.
