High tariffs between developed countries (new places to sell goods needed) European example—Africa, Asia, and S. Pacific taken by G.B., France, Germany, etc. Investing capital/new markets to sell goods Protectorates created—local rulers stay in control and imperial nation protects them—local rulers accept advice from imperial power
