Dr. Theobald Matthew • Established the Total Abstinence Society in Ireland, which was notable for requiring members to take an abstinence pledge. • Had a positive impact, with crime decreasing noticeably. • Over 7,000,000 had taken the abstinence pledge. • Went to America after being invited by Caleb Woodhull, mayor of New York, to have more people take his pledge. • This led to a tour around the whole country that was met with success and enthusiasm • “I thank heaven I have been instrumental in adding to the ranks of temperance over 600,000 in the United States.” • He started a wide temperance movement throughout the country and involved women in his movement.
