Notes on Previewing Vocabulary to Build Background for ELLs The following sentence is from, “The Elevator,” a short story in the 8th grade ELA textbook about a boy who is afraid to ride the old elevator in his apartment. “Perhaps its baleful atmosphere was due to the light from the single fluorescent ceiling strip, bleak and dim on the dirty brown walls.” A glossary note in the textbook explains baleful as “sinister or ominous,” descriptors that English Learners may not understand.

  2. baleful atmosphere A scary feeling about a place or person; or a feeling that something very bad will happen. • A cemetery or really old house could have a baleful atmosphere. • Think about a baleful place or person that you know.
