The Opportunity On October 18, 2013, Canada and Europe signed in principle the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) Market for Canadians: 500 million people $17 trillion in annual economic activity $2.3 trillion in annual imports $2.7 trillion government procurement market (national and sub-national) 18 months to 2 year lead time before ratification and implementation process is complete

The Way Forward SMEs are key to improving Canada’s trade performance: They have been more successful at growing exports in emerging markets; 90 per cent of them do not currently export - even small increases in trade activity can have a significant economic impact; They are well positioned to take advantage of Global Value Chains.

Canada’s Challenge 2008 Conference Board of Canada Study - most critical challenges SMEs face when addressing the global marketplace: Identifying good market opportunities; Finding reliable business partners; Managing supply-chain relationships and the demands of complying with quality control and systems requirements; Getting access to financing; Handling authentication and security; Protecting intellectual assets and business information; and Overcoming trade and regulatory barriers.

Enterprise Europe Network A network of 600+ partner organizations in 54 countries, that work together to promote business innovation, exports, and economic growth by identifying domestic opportunities for international technology, commercial, and research partnerships for their small and medium sized business clientele Network partners log requests and offers for business, technology and research partnerships on behalf of their SME clientele in a powerful database that currently contains over 13,000 profiles with more than 32,000 partnership opportunities. An important part of the European Commission’s support strategy for innovation and export development on the part of SMEs. Commission’s objective is clear: Help EU companies find new market opportunities and grow domestically and abroad.

  9. EEN & CME December 2012 - European Commission announced Canada’s formal entry into the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) and CME was selected as the EEN’s partner organization in Canada. Approval runs to the end of 2014. CME was formally endorsed by Minister for International Trade in a letter to the European Commission May 2013 – Canada’s participation in EEN formally announced by Minister Fast at Europe Day Reception in Ottawa

Enterprise Canada Network CME is building the Enterprise Canada Network (ECN), a network of organizations with SME clientele in Canada in order to identify Canadian companies looking for, and capable of, international business and technology partnerships. ECN will allow Canadian companies to connect to the business, technology and research opportunities posted in the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) and provide a suite of post-match services to facilitate the establishment of meaningful global partnerships. Objective is clear - Help Canadian companies find new market opportunities and grow domestically and abroad

ECN Progress – since 05/13 Incoming Opportunities to Canada by Sector/Country Automotive: 1-UK Building/Construction: 2 -UK and Denmark Biotech: 2 -UK and Hungary Manufacturing: 5 -Ireland, France, UK and Italy(2) Energy: 1 –Lithuania Cleantech: 1 –Belgium Other: 9 –Estonia, Sweden, Poland, Finland, Denmark, Belgium, Italy and UK. Opportunities Engaged 9 opportunities have been pre-qualified for the matchmaking stages. 6 opportunities have been successfully engaged for the matchmaking stages. Partnership Agreements: 2

ECN/EEN H2020 Examples France: H2020 – SFS-1-2014/2015 Sustainable terrestrial livestock production A French institute in agricultural research and livestock systems is seeking partners for a H2020 project dealing on adapting feed to the needs of monogastric animals (pigs and poultry). The project aims to improve the efficiency of production system by using adapted breeds, identifying new or alternative feed sources and new ways of delivering feed. SMEs active in animal feed production and diagnosis, in automation systems, and IT companies are sought to develop and implement demonstrations.

ECN/EEN H2020 Examples UK: H2020 Call: Zero or Near Zero Carbon Vessels (Section 4, Waterborne - MG.4.1-2014) Seeking shipbuilders to co-develop low drag hull technology A UK company is part of a consortium of UK members seeking a partner to join a Horizon 2020 funding bid. The aim is to develop a novel low-drag hull. They are seeking industrial partners in the shipbuilding industry to co-develop the innovation to proof of concept and to create a demonstration prototype. They are also seeking potential end users, such as supply ships.
  15. ECN/EEN H2020 Examples Norway: Electric Mobility in Norway is looking for partners to "Green vehicle 2014" call. H2020-GV-2014 The Client is a Norwegian industry cluster that cooperates and explores business opportunities within the electric vehicle market. The cluster are looking for international cooperation and are seeking partners for common projects. One actual arena is Horizon 2020 and "Green Vehicle 2014". The Cluster is currently establishing a test site to acquire knowledge and develop solutions to support electric mobility and where solutions can be tested in real-life settings
