  1. What is Success? • Dictionary Definition of Success • “…the achievement of something planned or attempted…” • “The only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary”.

  2. Success Stories are important communication tools • Provide a framework for understanding, remembering, and acting on information • Prevent your accomplishments from landing in the “General File” • Answers: “So what?”

What is a Success Story? • Positive change which occurred as a result of the program efforts • The change can be: • Social – Farmers maintaining adoption levels of TIMPs availed to them • Environmental – Conducive environment that increases agricultural production, productivity, as well as promote policy reforms • Economic – Adoption of user-friendly TIMPs by targeted farmers continue to lead to steady generation of income.

What is a Success Story?...... • A detailed & objective account about action & behavior relating exactly • How something was used • What results were achieved • What specific factors enabled or interfered with success • A simple description of a project’s: • Progress • Achievements • Lessons learned • A request for action.

Why you want a Success Story Gain visibility and credibility Educate and promote your project Satisfy information requests and educate stakeholders Garner more support and resources Accountability and evaluation Publicize early successes Market your project to your target population Provide a “face” to numbers Show progress when planned outcomes will not be realized until the distant future.

The 4 KNOWs of a Success Story • Know what information you want to tell: Relate it to: • Grant Objectives, e.g. • Dietary quality • Food safety • Water use efficiency, etc • Delivery methods • Know your audience ie don’t write to yourself. • Participating & Potential project sites • Partnering agencies • Funders • Media • Legislators and other policymakers.

The 4 KNOWs of a Success Story • Know to tailor your message to your audience • What is important to them? • Hot topics, key words and phrases • Time available to hear / read your story • Consider what information you want to tell • Constructing the story: Before you get started, ask: • Who is your audience? • What is the goal of the story? • Will the story be used for a chance meeting? A request for information? Other…? • Is the story timely?.

  8. The 4 KNOWs of a Success Story • Know your story • And let others know about it! • Practice your Success Stories and share them with others • Write for your reader, not for yourself • Always show a benefit • Memorable fact/truth • Emotional hook • Paint a picture • Sense of immediacy.

  9. The 4 KNOWs of a Success Story • Pretend the reader knows nothing whatsoever about your project. Don’t assume anything! • Remember… You are telling a short story about what you want to achieve in a project.

  10. FINAL TIPS Be prepared Know your audience Be systematic and consistent Know which issues are hot and why Have several different types of Success Stories ready at all times Periodically update your Success Stories.
