THE FORMER SOUTHWESTERN HOSPITAL400 block of Lee BoulevardLawton, Oklahoma A 63,320 square foot building occupied by the Southwestern Hospital as a 127-bed acute care facility from January 1907 until March 1986 and has remained vacant since that time. During the period of use, additions/modifications to the facility occurred in 1949, 1960, 1964 and 1976. The property and building were acquired by the KCAILUC in December 1990.

  3. Has now become a community eyesore

  4. Graffiti completely scars the outside facade

  5. When the building was abandoned the water had not been shut off. Through the years extensive flooding had occurred. About three years ago the water was shut off, however the damage was already done…

  6. Basement ceiling has extensivewater damage/mold

  7. Water drips from ceiling pipes

  8. Floating debris fills the basement

  9. Basement walls are covered in mold

  10. In the last five years vandalism became the prime threat to the building. Grafitti littered the outside but with a little work that could be removed. The damage to the inside, however, was more extensive. Walls were smashed, plumbing was removed or destroyed and the vagrants had all but taken over the building.

  12. Vagrants inhabit the building hanging belongings in doorways

  14. First Step – security fence installed

  15. Gates were installed for the loading of trucks

  16. Building is completely enclosed

  17. Next – asbestos containment areas are built

  18. Then the negative air equipment is installed

  19. Last but not least - worker de-contamination area is added

  20. Asbestos removal begins

  21. What was once thought impossible is now foreseeable
