  3. Why is This Important? • We live in a visual world! • Not a material world…that’s Madonna • Companies / individuals seek to manipulate their audience! • To vote… • To believe.. • To buy…

  4. Remember… • Everyone has a story to tell. • These visuals are someone’s “story” • Their perspective on the world • Their point of view on a topic • Their biastoward a subject ALL the SAME thing!

  5. How to We Read Visuals? Step 1: Set aside our OWN biases and pledge to see what the VISUAL IMAGE’S message is!

  6. How to We Read Visuals? • Two tracks to observe • Visual Track • Images • Text Track • Words written on images

  7. Visual Track Steps • What do you SEE? • What event / person / subject is depicted? • HOW are they / it depicted? • Size • Accuracy • Caricatured • Color Palette These will reveal BIAS of the image.

  8. Read Between the Lines • What do you LITERALLY see? • What might you INTERPRET? • What might the author be saying about the subject by drawing them this way?

  10. Text Track Steps • What do you see? • LITERALLY what is written? • What is that text’s TONE? • Honest • Sarcastic • Over-exaggerated These will reveal BIAS of the image.

  11. Detecting Tone • Reading between the lines… • What is realistic? • What is mocking? • What is sarcastic?

  12. Visual + Text • Put them together for interpretation. • If visual is making someone look SILLY, the text is probably saying something similar. • Sarcasm • Mocking • Must have BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE on the topic in the image! • What are the current perspectives on issues?

  13. Perspective on Issues? • Think back to political spectrum • Think back to both parties’ views • Liberal vs conservative • Change vs tradition • Secular vs religious • Men vs women

  14. Good summary… • The creator of this cartoon seems to be thinking ____________ on the issue of __________ because he or she is saying _____________ about ___________ THROUGH these visual images (__________) and THROUGH these text words (______________).
