Administration Clean Energy Goals Transport • Reduce oil imports by 1/3 by 2025 • Put 1 million electric vehicles on the road by 2015 Buildings and Manufacturing • Make non-residential buildings 20 percent more energy-efficient by 2020 Clean Generation • By 2035, generate 80 percent of electricity from a diverse set of clean energy sources Environmental • Cut GHG emissions in the range of 17 percent below 2005 levels by 2020, and 83 percent by 2050 • Security: • Advance domestic energy resources • Diverse supplies • Environment: • Achieve 80 percent reduction in Greenhouse Gas Emissions • Improve water and air quality (indoor and outdoor) • Economy: • Low cost energy services • Competitiveness • Clean energy business opportunities • Clean energy jobs

  5. Domestic Clean Energy Strategy • American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) • Advanced Research Projects Administration - Energy (ARPA-E) • Support from Annual Base Budget DOE: Leading the Way

  6. Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy • Energy Efficiency • Buildings • Weatherization/Govt. • Vehicles • Advanced Manufacturing • Federal Energy Management • Renewable Energy • Solar • Wind • Biomass/Biofuels • Water • Geothermal • Hydrogen & Fuel Cells

  7. DOE’s Renewable Energy High Impact Portfolio • Reduce the cost of utility-scale solar to $1/W (installed) by 2020 • Distributed wind energy, large-onshore wind, and integration; offshore wind energy • Low temperature geothermal, enhanced geothermal systems, co-production • Large-scale production of drop-in biofuels, bioproducts, and biopower • Sustainable small hydro, pumped storage, and environmental mitigation; marine hydrokinetic technologies • Initiative Hydropower Wind Energy Sunshot Geothermal Biomass Hydropower

  8. DOE Strategy for Critical Materials • Strategic Pillars • Diversify global supply chains • Develop substitutes • Reduce, reuse and recycle Material supply chain with environmentally-sound processes

  9. Shale Gas • Activity into new shale plays has increased dry shale gas production in the United States from 1 trillion cubic feet in 2006 to 4.8 trillion cubic feet in 2010. Wyoming Pennsylvania

  10. Today’s Topics • Overview of U.S. Clean Energy Goals and DOE’s Mandate • U.S.-Chile MOU on Clean Energy Technologies • Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas • Connecting the Americas 2022 • APEC - Energy Smart Communities Initiative

  11. Examples of U.S.-Chile EnergyCooperation • U.S.-Chile Energy Business Council (EBC) • Chile’s Renewable Energy Center • Solar Power • Geothermal Technical Cooperation • Smart Grid

  12. Chile-U.S. Renewables and Efficiency Cooperation • Chile’s Renewable Energy Center • Worked with the Ministry of Energy of Chile to support the development of its Renewable Energy Center. • Solar Power • Supported Chile in designing, issuing, and evaluating responses to a request for proposals (RFP) for a solar thermal power plant • in the Atacama Desert. • Geothermal Technical Cooperation • Worked in partnership to evaluate Chile’s geothermal energy programs and to provide technical support for geothermal training and industry development. • Smart Grid • Supported a Smart Grid Technologies Reverse Trade Mission to the United States by Chilean experts.

  13. Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA) There are over 40 initiative that address: Energy Efficiency Renewable Energy Cleaner and More Efficient Use of Fossil Fuels Energy Infrastructure Energy Poverty Sustainable Forests and Land Use Adaptation To learn more: http://www.ecpamericas.org/ • “Our hemisphere has bountiful natural resources that could make renewable energy plentiful and sustainable, while creating jobs for our people.” • President Obama, 2009 • at Fifth Summit of the Americas in • Trinidad and Tobago

  14. Connecting the Americas 2022 • Launched at the 6th Summit of the Americas in Cartagena • Interconnection helps: • Increase grid reliability • Partners benefit from complimentary markets • Provide opportunities for access to new power sources, including renewables • Alleviates energy poverty Fact Sheet: http://energy.gov/pi/office-policy-and-international-affairs/articles/connecting-americas-2022

  15. APEC - ENERGY SMART COMMUNITIES INITIATIVE (ESCI) • Announced by President Obama and Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan in conjunction with the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in November 2010. • ESCI aims to foster green growth, sustainable development and long-term job creation throughout the Asia-Pacific by demonstrating the practicality of clean energy technologies to reduce energy intensity and increase energy security. Smart Transport Smart Buildings Smart Communities Smart Grids Smart Jobs
