  1. Effects of Computer-Mediated Versus Teacher-Mediated Instruction on the Mathematical Word Problem-Solving Performance of Third-Grade Students With Mathematical Difficulties Written by Jayne M. Leh and Asha K. Jitendra Presented by: Justine Sares MIAA 330

  2. The Study • 26 third-graders that scored below 50th percentile on the Stanford-10 Achievement Test in NE United States • 3 teachers • TMI: Teacher-Mediated Instruction • Investigations in Number Data and Space • CMI: Computer-Mediated Instruction • GO Solve Word Problems Software • Duration: 6 Weeks • Main Focus: Word Problem Solving

  3. Results No significant difference between the pre-test and post-test of students in both TMI and CMI

  4. Pros & Cons • TMI • Pros: Students like the guided instruction of the teacher & teachers reported positive attitudes among students • Cons: Students reported boring instruction while teachers cannot give immediate feedback on misconceptions made • CMI • Pros: Students liked the materials better, were given immediate feedback and hints towards the correct answer if incorrect • Cons: Excessive time to teach software, unpredictability of software, student frustration with technology glitches

  5. What I learned to be beneficial • FOPS Checklist • F: Find the problem type • O: Organize the information in the problem using a diagram • P: Plan to solve the problem • S: Solve the problem

  6. Continued… • Relationship from CMI to Smarter-Balanced Assessment • Computer-based • Technology challenges • Student & Teacher frustration • It’s coming, ready or not!
