  2. Roots of Psychology People Question “Who are we?”, “Why do we think and feel and act as we do?” How do we understand those around us? We attempt to answer through scientific studies

  3. Psychology is born Wilhelm Wundt 1879 attempts to test the “atoms of the mind”

  4. Development as a discipline The study of observable behavior Freudian psychology – the unconscious mind and sexual conflicts Humanistic psychology – personal growth, love, acceptance Cognitive psychology – brain processes

  5. Psychology Today Defined as study of behavior and mental processes Behavior: biking, smiling, talking, etc. Mental processes: thoughts, beliefs, feelings

In the realm of Social Sciences Sociology: the study of human society History: the study of past events Economics: the study of the transfer of wealth Anthropology: the study of human beings and their ancestors/ culture through time Geography: the study of physical features of the earth Political Science: the study of government structures

Perspective • A way something is viewed • Psychology is led by certain perspectives • Neuroscience: connection of body and mind • Evolutionary: natural selection effects human behavior • Behavior genetics: how our genes effect behavior • Psychodynamic: behavior due to unconscious • Behavioral: how we learn to act • Cognitive: how we encode, process, store info • Socio-cultural: how behavior varies across cultures

  8. 4 Big Ideas Critical Thinking is Smart Thinking Behavior = biopsychosocial We operate on a two tack mind which we call Dual Processing (conscious + unconscious) Psychology explores human strengths and challenges
