Goal To make rather complex inflation data (Consumer Price Index) more accessible to those who don’t have degrees in economics, finance, etc. Idea Develop our own proprietary “shopping cart” of food-goods (after all, everyone needs to eat) that can be priced monthly; Calculate the average national price of each good, total shopping cart price and how many hours it takes the “average consumer” to buy the cart. Execution Mine average U.S. cart price data for last decade; Mine average U.S. earnings data for last decade; Crunch the numbers in Excel; Run Linear Regression against BLS Food and Beverage Index to decide whether we have a good proxy for food prices; Launch!
