  1. How can I help my child with Mathematics? Mark Rutherford School Mathematics Department January 2012

  2. Exam Specification • Edexcel Mathematics A (linear) • Examinations at the end of the course • Two written papers (100 marks on each paper) • Each paper lasts 1 hour 45 minutes • Paper 1 non-calculator • Paper 2 calculator • Tiered Papers • Foundation Tier grades C-G available • Higher Tier grades A*-D available

  3. Content Measures Geometry Number Algebra Probability Statistics

  4. Assessment Objectives • A01: Recall and use their knowledge of the prescribed content (45-55%) • A02: Select and apply mathematical methods in a range of contexts (25-35%) • A03: interpret and analyse problems and generate strategies to solve them (15-25%) • Quality of Written Communication (QWC)

  5. Quality of Written Communication (QWC) • To encourage students to communicate their mathematical working, reasoning and notation appropriately. • For example: • Reasoned argument as would be seen in a proof, particularly geometrical • Well presented statistical diagrams (labelling/scales) • Clearly stated decision based on evidence

  6. What can you do? • Support completion of homework • Know the maths homework night • Year 10 Week A Friday Week B Thursday • Year 11 Week A Monday Week B Monday • Pace not Haste - work produced to at least target grade - Refer to mymaths, mathswatch CD • Check answers • Maths Surgery – every Thursday after school

  7. What can you do? • Equipped for lessons - (pen, pencil, ruler, compasses, protractor, calculator) • Encourage learning of how best to use their calculator – sort out the basics, then the fancier buttons which make life easier. • Practical calculations • Utility bill costs, best buys, currency conversion

  8. Revision Tips • Use a download of the specification or the “Graded Skills Booklet”, provided by your teacher, so that you know what topics you need to cover. • Highlight your strengths and weaknesses so you know the topics you need to revise. • Spread the topics you need to revise over your revision timetable between now and the exam. • Use the revision guide / maths watch CD / mymaths website to revise the how to do. Worked examples are really useful so you know what has to be done and why.

  9. Revision Tips • Work through practice papers and past exam papers. The best way to revise maths is to practise. • Do one past paper under proper exam conditions – get someone to supervise you. • Work with friends, asking each other questions and teaching each other difficult topics. Make revision enjoyable! • Put the formulae you need to learn off by heart on posters around your bedroom – even on the ceiling above your bed!

  10. Useful Resources • CGP Revision Guide (School shop £3.50) • Mathswatch CD (School shop £5.00)
