  5. Esta mujer angélica de ojos septentrionales, que vive atenta al ritmo de su sangre europea, ignora que lo hondo de ese ritmo golpea un negro al parche duro de roncos atabales This angelical woman of septentrional eyes, so attentive to the heartbeats of her European blood, Ignores that in the depth of that rhythm a black man is beating the taut skin of coarse resounding drumheads El Abuelo –The Grandfather

Beneath the simple line of her nose sharp and pointed Her mouth – with a fine trace – traces a brief, short line And there’s no crow to blemish the geography of snow Of her flesh trembling nude, glowing bright altogether. El Abuelo –The Grandfather

  7. Ah, mi señora! Mírate las venas misteriosas; boga en el agua viva que allá dentro te fluye, y ve pasando lirios, nelumbios, lotos, rosas Oh, my dear Lady, Probe into the mystery of your veins, Row in the living waters flowing wild deep within you, and see lilies and roses and lotuses adrift El Abuelo –The Grandfather

And you will feel uneasy to see there by the river the fleeting sweet dark shadow of runaway grandfather – the one that made your blond head curly and frizzy forever. El Abuelo –The Grandfather

When I see and touch myself, me, Tom with Nothing just yesterday, and Tom with Everything today, and today with everything, I turn my eyes and look, I see and touch myself and wonder how this has come to be. TENGO by Nicolás Guillén I HAVE

I have, let's see,I have the pleasure to go throughout my country, owner of all there’s in it,looking quite closely at things I never had, nor could have had before. TENGO by Nicolás Guillén I HAVE

“Harvest” I can now say,“Mountain” I can now say,“City” I can say ,and “Army” say already mine, forever, and yours, ours, and a vast splendor ofsunbeams, flowers and stars. I have, let's see,I have the pleasure to go,me, a peasant, a worker, simple people,I have the pleasure to go (just an example)to a bank and speak to the manager in chargenot in English, not saying "Sir," but simply address him compañero , the way we say in español. I have, let's see, that being Blackno one can stop me at the entrance of a dance hall or a bar.Or at the reception of a hotel, scream at me that there is no room,a small room and not a royal room,a cosy little room where I could merely have some rest. . 14. I have, let's see, that there ‘s no rural policeto seize me and lock me away in a town jail,or that will tear me from my land and cast mein the middle of the country road. TENGO by Nicolás Guillén I HAVE
