  1. Chapter 7ICEM CFD / AI*Environment 5.1 ANSYS Workbench 9.0

  2. 5.1 Enhancements There are more that 60 new features and improvements in this release. • Please see the release notes for a complete list • Workbench Integration • Hotkeys • Geometry Handling • Surface meshing • Hex meshing • Hybrid meshing • Mesh editing • Solver support Major technology focus

  3. 5.1 Workbench Workbench Enhancements • Improved geometry integration • Simulation geometry and mesh can go to Advanced Mesher • Persistent Data Handling through Workbench

  4. WorkBench Integration Inside Workbench, AI*Environment becomes [Advanced Meshing] Tab Mesh and geometry in Simulation. Mesh and geometry transferred to Advanced Mesher Mesh and geometry can now be transferred from Simulation to Advanced Meshing for mesh editing etc.

  5. Persistence in AM Using the Workbench “Link to active CAD Geometry When a model is changed in Pro/E, or by the Design Modeler, the model can be updated in the Advanced Mesher Mesh parameters set up in Advanced Mesher Parametric changes in Pro/E Advanced mesher setup, including Part names, mesh parameters, boundary conditions, etc are tied directly to entity names. These are persistent from one design change to the next Update Geometry in Advanced Mesher

  6. Hot keys Tab specific hotkeys are now available to access tools on the Geometry, Edit Mesh and Blocking Tabs. Hotkey Maps are also available to help you use these time saving hotkeys, these can be found in the help; Help -> Select Options -> Hotkeys

  7. 5.1 Geometry Geometry enhancements • Better Faceted Data Handling • X-section tools • Curve Tangency Tools • Dormant Entities • Improved Baffle Curve/Point handling

  8. 5.1 Faceted Geometry • Faceted tools • Easier to access • Powerful tools for improving Scan data • Eg. Unusable model with 1500k poor triangles, holes, overlaps, etc. to 400k meshable model

  9. 5.1 New Geometry Tools A number of new geometry tools have been added including; • Trim surfaces normal to curve • Create a disc/plane along a curve X-section Tools Curve Tangency Tools • Reverse curve direction • Extend curve to a location or distance. • Match curve end to another curve • Bridge one curve to another curve

  10. 5.1 Geometry Arbitrary curves/points are respected in meshing • Curves placed on geometry are embedded into surfaces • Points placed on geometry are embedded into surfaces Points • Deletion of connected curves makes them dormant. • Editing Dormant Entities Improves Mesh Quality, as the mesher does not have to follow these entities. • Dormant entities improve functionality for build topology and surface select flood fill • Patch independence control Curves Dormant Curves (Grey) are not followed by the mesh

  11. 5.1 Surface Meshing Surface Meshing Enhancements • Improvements in Mapped based meshing • Improved Welding • Smart surface meshing • Geometry feature recognition • Improved loop failure correction • Parallel Batch Meshing Execution

  12. 5.1 Auto Seam Welding Auto Seam connectors(like auto-contact) • Seam weld by proximity • Looks for single edges for each partwithin a tolerance from other parts Welds defined in geometry file. Curtain quads appear during meshing. User can then locally modify/ add/remove specific connectors from geometry or mesh.

  13. 5.1 Meshing with Dormant Curves Build Topology with Filter curves/points Use Fillet detection to retain fillet regions.

  14. 5.1 Mapped Based Meshing Mapped Based Meshing automatically determines best fit to obtain min edge defined and orthogonality.

  15. 5.1 Hex Meshing Hex Meshing enhancements • 3D Unstructured Blocks • Easier Block Manipulation • Align vertices to Cylindrical LCS • AutoFace Alignment • Integrated Structured Grid support

  16. 5.1 Hex Meshing Use 3D Blocking to get mapped or swept blocks Which are Pure Hex or Hex & Prism respectively Convert Structured blocks to unstructured

  17. 5.1 Hex Meshing Structured Grid Editing • Smoothing integrated into PreMesh • Block Orientations • All mesh quality checks at PreMesh level

  18. 5.1 Hybrid Meshing Tet/Prism/Hex Dominant Meshing enhancements • Improved prism layer generation • Improved Quadratic elements quality and deviation from geometry • Remesh local Volume regions based on quality • Remesh voids

  19. 5.1 Hex Dominant Meshing Create 2D Mapped/Unstructured blocks or simply quad dominant surface mesh. Use Hex Dominant Mesher to generate the volume mesh HEXA : 6025 TETRA : 3349 PRISM : 836 PYRA : 5461 Surface mesh only

  20. Prism on Hybrid Mesh • Merged Hex/Tet mesh • Pyramids at interface • Run Prism to get uniform prism layer through both regions

  21. 5.1 Remesh volume by subset • Put problem or bad quality elements into a subset • Modify the subset to add a few layers of elements • Locally remesh the volume elements of this subset.

  22. 5.1 LS-Dyna Pre/Post-Processing • Model setup in AI*Environment • Nonlinear materials • Head on or side impact collision • LS-Dyna Post-Proc in AI*E • Transient Analysis, Contour Plots and Animation
