Word of the Day/Initial Activity • Transcontinental • Spanning against all of America. • Choo-Choos! • Answer these questions based upon observations of the picture. • Describe the differences between these two forms of transportation • Discussion • How would the change from horse power to machine power effect America?

  4. Building Challenges • Little experience with large railroads • Central Pacific Railroad Company starts in Sacramento • Union Pacific Railway Company starts at the Missouri River • Problems: • Money • Plains Indians • Sierra Nevada Mountains • Great Plains

  5. “Life Line to the West” • Western areas populated from gold rushes but cut off from rest of the country. • May 10, 1869: Promontory Point, Utah • Travel time between Atlantic and Pacific drops from 4 months to 10 days. • Pacific Railway Act • Land granted to companies • Land sold to settlers to raise money • Towns raise around the lines, settlers flock to “boom” towns • Creates “Railroad Barons” • Brings trade goods all over country.
