  1. Sundown Towns “The Thing You Didn’t Know What It Was” Insley Smullen

  2. To fulfill all requirements for CSI 100 Final Project. • To select a subject of interest to me that is versatile enough to be divided among the requirements for said project. • To acquire useful and relevant information on Sundown Towns • To present my project to the class in an interesting and engaging format. Goals:

  3. Attack Plan: • Research, research, research! • Upload my files on the WinSCP Sampson server. • Utilize Dr. Loewen’s book and comprehensive website.

  4. Difficulties: • Compiling data for Kent and Queen Anne’s counties. • Finding enough images for my site. • Finding relevant • media/applets.

  5. What’s A Sundown Town? • Sundown Towns were towns with all-white residents only. • Appeared mostly after the Civil War, and peaked during the Nadir. • Spanned the entire United States. • Towns kept out African Americans and Asian Americans mostly. • “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on You in _________.”

  6. Why You Haven’t Heard of it: • Sundown Towns remain an unmentioned part of America’s past. • Historians up to present-day have overlooked the existence of Sundown Towns. This is partially because they have been consistently undocumented in all historical documents (excluding the census). • The first comprehensive academic document on the subject was published in 2005 by James Loewen.
