  1. Hubble Space Telescope Kathryn Whitmire 12/7/13

  2. Review

  3. More review • Multiple delays • Technical • Budget • Challenger explosion • Launched April 24, 1990

  4. Still Review • Pictures sent back blurry

  5. NASA Analysis • Mirror had spherical aberration • Flat by 2.2 micrometers • New null corrector not set up correctly by stressed worker

  6. NASA Analysis cont. • Testing used both RvNC and RNC • Refractive null corrector (old) • Reflective null corrector (new) • RvNC showed error, but dismissed • Of course the newer model was right, it was made for this

  7. Null Corrector Info

  8. Solution • Replacing mirror vs other HW fix

  9. Solution • Replacing mirror VERY time consuming

  10. Solution • Replacing mirror cost money

  11. Solution • Replacing mirror judged impractical

  12. Solution Model Program/Machine -Mirrors -Lenses -Camera Mirrors and lenses must have correct curvature to resolve incoming light into photo -Incoming light -No gravity -Light resolved into photo World/Requirements

  13. Solution Model

  14. Solution Possibilities • Hardware fix • Use lenses/mirrors • Software fix • Use algorithm to resolve images

  15. Solution Used • Corrective Optics Space Telescope Axial Replacement (COSTAR) • Inserting two mirrors into light path to correct error • High Speed Photometer removed • Wide Field and Planetary Camera already in process of being upgraded • Included correction in new instrument

  16. Result: Before • Blurred picture

  17. Result: After • Clear picture
