Student Survey Results - Highlights • On average, 58% of students in all grades grades felt that the Peaceful Bus Program had made the bus ride better – See Graph #1. • 5th Graders had the lowest number of Yes responses – 52% • 3rd Graders had the highest number of Yes responses – 64% • On average, the vast majority of students (91%) in all grades believe that there are responsible adults to whom they can turn in the event they encounter problems on the bus – See Graph #2 • Students in all grades feel empowered to stop bullying – See Graph #3 • While 75% of First Grade students responded that students are trying to make the bus ride better, the average percentage of yes responses for all grades was much lower: On average 59% of students answered yes to the question of whether most students on the bus are trying to make the bus a peaceful one. – See Graph #4. • 75% of First Graders felt that students were trying to make the bus ride better. However, since the number of first grade respondents was 14% of the total respondents, this did not significantly impact the average. • Approximately half of all 5th grade respondents (52%) felt that students were trying to make the bus ride better.
Student Feedback – Summary of Written Comments • Bus is too loud. • 4th & 5th Graders are forcing kids out of seats. • 4th & 5th Graders are mean to younger kids. • Kids are crying every day, there is chaos on the bus, things are being thrown around the bus. • There is “territoriality” on the bus.
Faculty Feedback – Summary by Survey Question • What has worked well in your bus route group meetings? • The majority of the faculty respondents mentioned that working together in small groups was a good way to foster participation and discussion. • A few respondents cited the benefits of pairing older students with younger students. • Several faculty members commented that the activities were age appropriate and well organized.
Faculty Feedback – Summary by Survey Question (cont.) • What are some issues or concerns you have about your bus route group meetings? What has not gone well? • Several respondents mentioned that bus drivers were not engaged unless directed by a group leader. It did not appear as though the bus drivers understood the purpose of the assemblies. • Lack of follow up on bus routes following assemblies; Too much time elapses without accountability. • Some groups did not have a bus driver present. • Some kids had difficulty sharing with partners. Some of the routes did not have a good representation of younger students which made pairing difficult. • Several respondents mentioned the need for an outline of the assembly/activities so that they could know what to expect and thus support the facilitator. • Several respondents indicated that there were no issues or concerns.
Faculty Feedback – Summary by Survey Question (cont.) • What changes would you suggest to help us improve this program? • Ensure that all adults know what the goal of the lesson is before the assembly (not just the leaders). • Check in with the bus drivers regularly to see if strategies are being implemented. • Have principal assign seating and periodically change seating on buses. Have children sit in order of drop off. Mix younger students with older students. • Ensure there is enough appropriate material for skills and resource children. • Invite parents to help facilitate and have more bus drivers participate. • Add role playing or team building activities.
Faculty Feedback – Summary by Survey Question (cont.) • What are some ways we could better support you before, during, or after the bus assemblies? • Majority of respondents would like to see a lesson plan beforehand to help facilitate assemblies. • Several believed that parents should be involved. • More materials are needed ahead of time to prepare resource and skills children. • Many instructors felt that nothing was needed, that the program was simple and straightforward. • One teacher felt the need for more assemblies.
Parent Feedback – Summary by Survey Question • What are some positive changes you have seen regarding your child/children's experience on the school bus since we started the Peaceful School Bus Program? • Complaints regarding noise have decreased. • Overall complaints have decreased. • Kids are more aware of drivers and it has made them feel like they are on the same team. • There is not as much yelling, not as many kids are standing up on the bus. • There are fewer problems, less bullying. • Kids are talking about proper behavior which translates to other areas as well. • This was a wonderful idea with great intentions, but it was not that effective.
Parent Feedback – Summary by Survey Question (cont.) • Has your child/children made any comments about riding on the school bus? In the space below, please describe. • Kids and bus driver use inappropriate language. One parent commented that the bus driver shouts at the children. • Riding the bus has become more peaceful, less stressful. • Loved it when Ms. Gemmill road the bus! • Buses are too loud. • Child feels safe and knows there is someone who will intervene if there is a problem. • There is still bullying going on. Need more emphasis on the bullying issue, especially with younger children so that they understand that bullying is not acceptable on the bus or anywhere else. • None – No news is good news!
Parent Feedback – Summary by Survey Question (cont.) • Based on your understanding of the Peaceful School Bus, please provide us with any additional suggestions or thoughts for us to use in planning our future activities. • Use role playing with kids as bus drivers and riders. • Use videos to show inappropriate behavior and ask kids to make suggestions for addressing this behavior. • In-school time devoted to this program is not worthwhile • Assemblies are a great way to reinforce concepts. Son likes artwork hanging up in the school and likes his picture hanging up in school near his bus number. • Need to spend more time on this, especially with older students so that they fully understand that they should not torment younger children. My child has come off the bus in tears on a few occasions. • Need bus monitors (Bus 22) • I like the program but both kids mocked it. • It’s a good program, glad that you took it on, keep it going.
