Basic Facts • In 1830, Emily Dickinson was born in Amherst, Massachusetts and all of her life she lived there. • Her parents were Edward Dickinson and Emily Norcross Dickinson • She went to primary school for four years • Her education was influenced by Puritan religion • She fell in love and married a minister named Reverend Charles Wadsworth • She experienced and emotional crisis • Her traumatized state of mind inspired her to write • prolifically • Dickinson had a kidney disease, which led to her death

  4. What Makes emily’s poem unique? • Emily Dickinson has a very unique style • Uses a lot of dashes, short stanzas, and dense lines • Uses slanted rhymes; these are words that do not rhyme but could end in the same letters or sounds

Poem Text • I heard a Fly buzz – when I died – • The Stillness in the Room • Was like the Stillness in the Air – • Between the Heaves of Storm – • The Eyes around – had wrung them dry – • And Breaths were gathering firm • For that last Onset – when the King • Be witnessed – in the Room – • I willed my Keepsakes – Signed away • What portions of me be • Assignable – and then it was • There interposed a Fly – • With Blue – uncertain stumbling Buzz – • Between the light – and me – • And then the Windows failed – and then • I could not see to see –
