  1. PAUL I – TSAR OF RUSSIA 1796-1801 Melody Tillyer

  2. WHO WAS PAUL I? • Paul I was the son of Catherine the Great • When she died, he succeed the throne and became Emperor of Russia in 1796. • He married Sophia Dorothea, renamed Maria Feodorovna, in 1776 and they had 4 sons, one of them being Alexander I.

  3. CLAIMING THE THRONE • Alexander I seemed to be a more preferable heir to the throne than Paul I to Catherine • It was rumored that as a result of paranoia, Paul went through her belongings the night of her death and destroyed any papers that could have jeopardized his right to the throne. • After claiming the throne, he instituted Pauline Laws, which established the principle of  primogeniture in the  House of Romanov, leaving the throne to the next male heir.

  4. CONFLICTS WITH FRANCE • Paul believed that the French colonies Napoleon had established in Europe needed to be restored to their traditional powers. • He gained the support of the Ottoman Empire, Britain, and Austria to help him stop French expansion and restore the conquered countries to their old ways. • Paul also wanted the island of Malta, which France took in 1798; this was another reason Paul wanted to go to war with them. • War with France did not actually occur under Paul’s reign.

  5. ASSASSINATION • Paul was disliked by many, and on March 23, 1801 at St. Michael’s Castle, he was assassinated. • Paul was hiding in his bedroom (he had extreme paranoia), when a group of dismissed officers, led by General Bennigsen and General Yashvil stormed in. • First they tied him up at a table and demanded him to abdicate. He did not and one of the men in the group stabbed him with a sword. He was then also strangled and trampled to death.

  6. Alexander’s succession • After the death of his father, Paul I, Alexander I, Paul’s oldest son succeeded the throne. • Alexander claimed to return Russia to the way it was during the reign of his grandmother, Catherine the Great. • It is rumored that Alexander knew about the plot to murder his father, but did not say anything because he did not expect it to actually happen.
