  2. Tragic Hero Definition • a basically good character whose downfall is brought about by his or her tragic flaw (hamartia) • flaw is often hubris • flaw is a error in judgment brought on by a personality trait, NOT an action • downfall doesn’t necessarily mean death

Tragic Hero Examples • Jay Gatsby’s naïve idealism gets him killed at the end of The Great Gatsby. • MacBeth’s greed and malleability lead to his demise in MacBeth. • Creon’s stubbornness leads to the loss of everyone he loves in the play Antigone. • On 24, Jack Bauer’s single-minded dedication to his job negatively affects all of his relationships, leaving him sad and alone. • Example from Romeo and Juliet?
