  1. God Wants Obedience Not ExcusesExodus 3:1-4:17 • 1. When God Reveals Himself – Pay Attention • God speaks to us when we stop to give him our attention. • We fail to notice when God tries to get our attention because we are too preoccupied. • Are you making time in your busy life to read his Word so that you can hear him speak to you?

  2. 2. When God Calls Us To Serve – Don’t Make Excuses • Exodus 3:8,10 (NIV) - I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians... So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.” • a. Lack of Confidence: • Exodus 3:11 (NIV) “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”

  3. God is gracious and patient with his servants. • Exodus 3:12 (NIV) - “I will be with you.” • When God calls us to do something for him he promises to be with us. • b. Lack of Authority • Exodus 3:13 (NIV) - “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?”

  4. Exodus 3:14,15 (NIV) - “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ” This is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation. • God reassures Moses: You are going on My Authority! •  Often when we try to witness we don’t go out with any authority.

  5. 1 Peter 3:15 (NIV) - …be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. • Matthew 28:18–19 (NIV) “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations.” • c. Lack of Support from Others • Exodus 4:1 (NIV) – “What if they do not believe me or listen to me and say, ‘The Lord did not appear to you’?”

  6. Moses reveals his real fear of ridicule and rejection. • God tells Moses that his first priority is obedience. • Exodus 4:2,3 (NIV) - Then the Lord said to him, “What is that in your hand?” “A staff,” he replied. The Lord said, “Throw it on the ground.” Moses threw it on the ground and it became a snake, and he ran from it.

  7. God prepares us to meet the challenges we face when we are called to serve him. • God has given us his Word: • Hebrews 4:12 (NIV) For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword.” • God has given us his Spirit: • Acts 1:8 (NIV) But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses.”

  8. d. Lack of Ability • Exodus 4:10 (NIV) Moses said to the Lord, “O Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.” • Exodus 4:11,12 (NIV) The Lord said to him, “Who gave man his mouth? Who makes him deaf or mute? Who gives him sight or makes him blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.”

  9. 1 Corinthians 2:4 (NIV) - My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power. • God has given all believers in Christ that same power through his Spirit • Are you choosing to serve God in HIS power or are you relying on your own?

  10. e. Lack of Obedience • Exodus 4:13 (NIV) “O Lord, please send someone else to do it.” • Moses reveals his true heart - He really just didn’t want to go. • Exodus 4:14 (NIV) - the Lord’s anger burned against Moses. • When we outright disobey – God is not pleased. • God will forfeit blessings that would have been ours if we had an obedient heart.

  11. What is God calling you to do for him today that you have been resisting by making up excuses? • Commit yourself to obey him! • God’s Word provides us with wonderful promises that will counter any excuses we can come up with.
