  3. Manifest Destiny • 1800’s term to describe the long-standing belief that it was obvious God wanted the US to stretch from the Atlantic to the Pacific • Fueled westward expansion, which fueled desire to fulfill Manifest Destiny

  4. Major Land Acquisitions • The Louisiana Purchase • President Thomas Jefferson wanted to get trading rights along Mississippi to New Orleans • Delegation was sent to France

  5. Major Land Acquisitions • The Louisiana Purchase • Napoleon needs cash to go to war with Britain • Napoleon sells New Orleans for $15 million…

  14. So Who Doesn’t Benefit? • Slaves – Owners only took some slaves west – families were divided

  16. Displacement of Native Americans • Jackson announces a formal policy of Indian removal

  17. Displacement of Native Americans • Some (Seminoles, etc) fought to keep their land, but are defeated

  18. Displacement of Native Americans • Others (Cherokee, etc.) tried to assimilate • Cherokee in GA became farmers • Soon, gold is found on their land

  19. Displacement of Native Americans • GA tries to take their land • The Cherokee appealed to the Supreme Court

  20. Displacement of Native Americans • The Supreme Court upheld the Native American’s right to the land. • Jackson’s response: “Now let them enforce it!”

  21. The Trail of Tears • The Cherokee were “displaced” or kicked off their land. • Moved from fertile GA to barren Oklahoma • Eventually this was taken away as well
