  4. What is “Citizenship”? • The Quality of an Individual’s response to membership in a community

  5. What is “Community”? • People with a common interest living in a particular area.

  6. What is “Community”? • A body of persons or nations having a common history, social, economic, and political interests

  7. Pre-requirementsor…things you should have done before you got here!!!

  8. 1. Describe your community to your counselor giving: Short history Cultures and ethnic groups Major places of employment. What is the future of your community?

  9. 2. Mark or point out on a map of your community the following: Chief government buildings. Schools, churches, and synagogues near your home. Fire station, police station,and hospital nearest your home. Main highways to neighboring cities and towns. Nearest railroads and bus stations and airport, if any. Chief industries or other major places of employment Historical and other interesting points.

  11. Chart the organization of your local or state government. • Show the top offices and tell which are elected or appointed.

  15. #4. Attend One: • County or parish board meeting • City council meeting • School board meeting • Municipal, county, or state court session.

  16. #5. After visiting the governmental meeting, obtain a copy of that body's published budget. Review the major sources of income and expenses for its operation with your counselor.

  17. INCOME • City Income Tax • Water and Sewer payments • Parking Tickets • Property Tax • Traffic Fines • Etc.

  18. Out go • Pay city employees • Pay insurance • Pay utilities • Pay for contracted services • Purchase equipment and supplies • Etc.

  19. 7. Select a city, county, or school problem or issue under consideration from the local newspaper or news broadcast and write a letter expressing your views to the mayor, administrator, or school board president. Show this letter and any response to your counselor.

  20. Dear Mayor Loster, Please change your position on distributing the Community Development Block Grant funds. If you gave more of the money to Community Policing and less to the social service agencies, this would be a better city. Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.

  32. It is ACTION or DEEDS! • It is knowledge about where you live. • It is participation in your city or town’s government. • It is caring about the future of where you live.

  33. Why do you think it’s required for your Eagle Rank? • Eagle Scouts are leaders. • Eagle Scouts are doers. • Eagle Scouts shape the future of our world!
