  3. Can you explain the formation of a rainbow?

  4. The Scientific Enterprise A scientific meeting, communication, and debate are important to the development of scientific explanations.

  5. Steps in the Scientific Method • 1. Observation • 2. Formulation of Rules • 3. Development of Hypothesis, Theory • 4. Testing of the hypothesis or theories by further observation

  6. The Scientific Method

  7. The case of the malfunctioning coffee pot

  8. Physics Physics is the study of the basic characteristics of matter and its interactions. Physics can be divided into classical physics and modern physics. Classical Physics: Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Electricity and Magnetism, and Optics. Modern Physics: Atomic physics, Nuclear Physics, Particle physics, and Condensed-Matter physics.

  12. A Super-Proton-Synchrotron (SPS) Particle Accelerator

  13. Why are measurements so important?

  14. Read the measure?

  15. Why study everyday phenomena?

  16. Units: Metric and British

  17. Scientific Notation What do you know about sound and light?

  18. Scientific Notation What do you know about sound and light? Speed of sound in air (at 200C) = 343 m/s or 767 MPH Speed of light = 299792458 m/s Distance from Earth to Mars = 78300000000 m.

  19. Metric Prefixes

  20. NASA's Rover Rolls Onto Mars Surface

  21. Exercise • How long will it take for the radio signal from the rover on mars to reach earth?
