  1. INTERFACING HDM-4 WITH EXTERNAL SYSTEMS

  2. Interfacing HDM-4 with External Systems- Implementation Activities • NOT just physical linkage to external system! • Two steps: • Calibration of HDM-4 to local conditions (50%) * • Data interface development (50%) * * not necessarily in this order. Calibration is an iterative process of refinement.

  3. Interfacing HDM-4 with External Systems What calibration needs to be done for each implementation of HDM-4?

  4. Calibration/Adaptation Activities- Initial Data Flow Schematic 4 HDM-4 Work Programs Inventory Projects Survey Etc. RDBMS

  5. Calibration/Adaptation Activities • Vehicle Fleet • Works Standards • HDM-4 Configuration Data • Model Calibration • Reports • Language

  6. Calibration/Adaptation Activities- Vehicle Fleet Calibration • Representative Vehicle Types • Basic Characteristics • Unit Costs • Detailed Calibration The above data is held in HDM-4 database

  7. Calibration/Adaptation Activities(e.g. Bangladesh Vehicle Fleet) Motorised vehicle types: • Baby Taxi • Mishuk • Tempo • Small Truck (converted jeep) • Tata Truck • Toyota Corolla • Coach

  8. Calibration/Adaptation Activities- Works Standards • Works types • maintenance • improvement • Unit costs • Construction quality • material properties • construction quality • compaction, etc.

  9. Calibration/Adaptation Activities(e.g. Bangladesh Work Types) • Works types: • SBST • DBST • Thin Overlay • Thick Overlay • Rehabilitation • Widening • Intervention levels

  10. Calibration/Adaptation Activities- HDM-4 Configuration Data • Traffic Flow Patterns • Speed Flow Types • Climate Zones • Currencies • Aggregate Data Above data is held in HDM-4 database (not RDBMS)

  11. Calibration/Adaptation Activities- HDM-4 Configuration Data • Aggregate data - country specific: • traffic volume • road class • geometry class • construction quality • surface texture • surface condition • structural adequacy • ride quality

  12. Calibration/Adaptation Activities- RD Model Calibration Typical RD relationship: CRPCDS dACW = Kcpw zw [(zw a4 a5tW YE4 (SNPa6) + SCWa5 )1/a5 - SCW] (change in area of wide structural cracking)

  13. Calibration/Adaptation Activities- RD Model Calibration CRPCDS dACW = Kcpw zw [(zw a4 a5tW YE4 (SNPa6) + SCWa5 )1/a5 - SCW] Calibration Factor Model Coefficients

  14. Calibration/Adaptation Activities- RD Model Calibration RD calibration factors:

  15. Calibration/Adaptation Activities- RD Model Calibration RD model coefficients:

  16. Calibration/Adaptation Activities- Other Activities • Reports • Special report requirements • Using user-defined reports facility • Language • Is native language version required? • User interface • Reports • Documentation, etc.

  17. Calibration/Adaptation Activities- Revised Data Flow Schematic 4 HDM-4 Vehicle Data Work Standards Configuration Data Model Coefficients Work Programs Inventory Projects Survey Special Reports Calibration Factors RDBMS Etc.

  18. Interfacing HDM-4 with External Systems How do we link HDM-4 to external systems? How do we develop the data-exchange interface?

  19. HDM-4 Import / Export Facilities • Support for all HDM-4 items: • Road Networks • Vehicle Fleets • Projects, Programmes, Strategies • Configuration, etc. • For transfer of data between PCs • Interfacing with external systems • Uses dBase ‘.dbf’ files

  20. HDM-4 Import / Export Facilities

  21. Import / Export Facilities -Road Network Import Format

  22. Import / Export Facilities -Sample Road Network Output

  23. Interfacing HDM-4 with External Systems And now for the ‘clever’ bit...

  24. Interfacing HDM-4 with External Systems- The Data Exchange Interface 4 HDM-4 Vehicle Data Work Standards Configuration Data Model Coefficients Work Programs Inventory Projects Survey Special Reports Calibration factors Etc. RDBMS

  25. Generating the Export File - Outline Procedure 1.0 User selects links from RDBMS 2.0 Generate sections 2.1 Segmentation 2.2 Selection of defaults (using look-up table) 2.3 Aggregation 3.0 Write section(s) to export file (dBase)

  26. Generating the Export File- Selecting Sections

  27. Generating the Export File- Selecting Sections

  28. Generating the Export File- Coping with Missing Data RMS data compatible with HDM-4 Defaults for missing data items Total HDM-4 road data requirement =

  29. Generating the Export File- Data Interface Schematic Selected RDBMS Links Representative Section Look-up Table

  30. Generating the Export File- Export Options

  31. Generating the Export File - Outline Procedure 1.0 User selects links from RDBMS 2.0 Generate sections 2.1 Segmentation 2.2 Selection of defaults (using look-up table) 2.3 Aggregation 3.0 Write section(s) to export file (dBase)

  32. Generating the Export File- the Traffic Problem Problem Road networks in HDM-4 version 1.0 only support TOTAL motorised and NMT traffic, and not traffic by vehicle type. Solution Don’t use a road network export file to transfer data - use a programme analysis export file.

  33. Interfacing HDM-4 with External Systems Any Questions?

  34. Institutional Impacts of Implementing HDM-4 • Should we: • adapt HDM-4 to suit local methods*, or • adapt local methods to suit HDM-4? • (* e.g. survey / data collection)
