Why WasteWise, Why Now? • Help state agency reduce more waste and buy more recycled products • Save agencies money on disposal and purchases • Set example for business and industry through government leadership • Strengthen existing state policy • Support environmental sustainability in state government

  5. Components of Program • Join for a three-year period • Convene inter-agency task force • Set five practical and measurable goals • Invite state agency participation • Provide outreach and training • Track annual progress

  7. NC WasteWise Goals waste  prevention “using less material to the same job;cutting waste before recycling” • Reduce office paper waste • Conduct annual waste assessments • Facilitate reuse of surplus property

  8. NC WasteWise Goals recycling “any process by which solid wastes are collected, processed, and manufactured into new feedstocks or products” • Expand recycling opportunities for agencies outside Raleigh

  9. NC WasteWise Goals buying • recycled “purchasing products that contain materials diverted from the solid waste stream” • Increase proportion of recycled paper and paper products purchased to 100%
