  2. He is well known for his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Grapes of Wrath. • Other well known books by him are East of Eden and the novella Of Mice and Men. • Steinbeck received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962. • All in all he wrote twenty-seven books.

John Steinbeck studied hard at Stanford University • never graduated. • Later tried to become a free-lance writer in New York, but finally gave up. • He wrotehisfirstnovel, Cup of Gold, in 1929. • Histhreefirstnovelswereunsuccesful. • The firstpopularbookwas Tortilla Flat, written in 1935. • Also a moviewas made in 1942.

During and after World War II Steinbeck began to writenovels with a lot of social criticism. • During the worldwar he alsoworked as a warcorrespondentfor New York Herald Tribune. • His later writings were slighter works of entertainment and journalism. • Won the Nobel Prize of Literature in 1962 for: • for his “realistic and imaginative writing, combining as it does sympathetic humor and keen social perception.”

Died in 1968, when he was 66 years old. • He is definiatleyone of the mostappriciated American authors. • On February 27, 1979, on what would have been his 77th birthday, he was honored by being placed on a U.S. postage stamp. • Therehasbeendone 17 moviesbased on hisnovels. • Mostfamousone is probablyEast of Eden, with James Dean in the leadingpart.
