  1. Political Ideologies PLEASE DO NOW On a ¼ scrap sheet of paper from Mr. Wood, please respond to the following: If you could create your own government what types of things would you make legal? What types of things would you make illegal? How much freedom would the regular person have to do whatever they wanted? Would there be high or low taxes? Would the government help out troubled people or leave them to solve their own problems?

  2. Political Ideology A set of beliefs (ideas, assumptions) about how people act, and how the government and society should be run

  3. Implicit Ideologiesvs.Reformist Ideologies • use propaganda to keep the rich wealthy, and the poor weak • critique society; describe what a perfect society would be and lay out a way to get there

  4. Socialism • All wealth is created through work • Some people don’t make things, but provide a service • Some people’s jobs are to accumulate wealth

  5. Marxism • Form of Socialism • Two classes of people: • Proletariat (workers) and Bourgeoisie (owners) • Eventually, the Proletariat will overthrow the Bourgeoisie Support the workers’ revolution!

  6. Conservativism • There are natural classes of people • Each class has a God-given job to do • Some people’s jobs are to rule others • Resisting the government is bad I think rich people should have more money!

  7. Liberalism • Wealth is not evenly distributed • Wealth = value • Competition creates the most equal distribution of wealth • Individual freedom is good • Government is bad I think ALL people should have healthcare, no matter the cost

  8. Anarchism • Rulers of states (governments) hold the power, and they cause the suffering • So there should be no rulers • Society should be run by groups of people with common goals

  9. I evolved to protect myself from sharks! Social Darwinism • The people that have the best abilities to survive in society will be the most successful • War and poverty are needed to get rid of the least successful people • One race dominating another is natural

  10. Nationalism The nation should command the highest form of loyalty of the individual, and the government has the right to demand anything from it’s people.

  11. Political ideologiesPolitical parties

  12. Activity “Ideologyville” Come up with 5 laws for the ideal nation that you rule under your ideology Use the textbook “Single Party States” to go over more details about your ideology

  13. Homework example: Nationalismville Mankind is naturally divided up into nations; the nation is the only true way to organize people. A nation has its own territory and laws. The nation should be a person’s highest priority; there is nothing more important to a person than the nation – including their own lives. Many problems: attacking other nations because your nation is believed to be best; there is nothing that really lays out what a nation should be; often leads to racism

  14. Read your assigned ideology in Chapter 1 of “Single Party States” Please Do Now Write down 3 main ideas about your ideology that may not have been in the notes OR Write down 2 laws that you think your ‘ville would pass if they were a country with this ideal form of government

  15. 1. Share your laws.2. Write down your 5 best laws on the 8.5x11 sheet of paper3. Present your ideology and laws to the class Ideologyville
