  2. What do you want to achieve? • 1)Various conference possibilities • Survive and drink beer • Impress your supervisor • Win the poster competition • 2)Uses after the conference • Show off to Mum • Decorate the hallway • Group and/or personal goals

Carry and display it: but how? • 1)Your’e an artist, so you need a case! • Not so good on a plane, and heavy • 2)Roll it, fold it or deal the deck? • Free choice, but check the price, and • Think size, time and next time • Keep it in your hand luggage 3)Take your supplies with you • Drawing pins, velcro strips, bluetack • Coloured pens, Pads, Foils, (P)re-prints

Size matters: from A4 to A0 1)Check size allowed, typically 1.5m x 1.2m • A4 = 210 x 297 mm (max 5 x 5, typ 4 x 3) • A3 = 297 x 420 mm (max 3 x 3, typ 3 x 2) • A2 = 420 x 594 mm (max 3 x 2 typ 2 x 2) • A1 = 594 x 840 mm (max 2 x 1, typ 2 x 1) • A0 = 840 x 1188 mm (1 sheet maximum) 2)Size and flexibilty • Small is easier to carry, more flexible, but • More work at the conference

The medium and the message • 1)Be clear and succinct above all • Large print, clear title & abstract • Sections, bullet points & figures • References & captions (small print) • Think KISS and ‘less is more’ • 2)That extra something? • Stereo or pop-up pictures? • Real samples, leaf-through data? • Reprint request sheet, card drop? • A4 copies of poster?

Don’t take too long over it • 1)You have other things to do as well • Posters as journalism, not archive • Good practice for setting deadlines • 2)Take shortcuts and enjoy the process • You have an artistic side, let it out • Not all of it has to be on computer • 3)Lastminute.panic? • Inevitable but beware supplies, time competition, computers & printers
