  3. The atomic bomb • The atomic bomb shaped the modern world in so many ways. • There have only ever been two atomic bombings. • These two bombings both occurred during world war two. • These bombs effectively ended the second world war.

Context • Germany had invaded Poland on the 1st of September 1939. • There was an immediate reaction from the allies who had been trying to supress a German uprise through the treat of Versailles immediately after world war one. • Their reaction was to declare war on Germany. The second world war had started.

Context • Japan entered the war due to the pact it had signed with Nazi Germany and fascist Italy. • In December 1941 Japan attacked the allies by bombing pearl harbour declaring war on the United states. • At that time America was neutral however after this unprovoked attack America declared war on Japan. This entangled them in the war in Europe as well as they could not ignore their former allies.

Albert Einstein and Leo Szilard • Albert Einstein was one of the greatest of the entire world. • He was asked by a group of scientist in America lead by Leo Szilard to write a letter to President Roosevelt who was the leader of America at the time • This letter notified the president that he had knowledge of the Nazi’s starting to develop uranium in the hope of creating a mass destruction weapon. And that it would be in the best interest of the war effort to also invest in their own research

  8. The Manhattan Project • This was the name given to the project in developing the first atomic bomb. • Over the six years that this bomb was developed it cost the American government 2 billion dollars. • At the head of the project was Robert Oppenheimer.
