  4. Our Specials Schedule This year for Specials, our students are grouped by colors. Please remember tennis shoes on PE days! Blue, Violet, Brown, and Black (PE on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays) Red,Orange, Yellow, and Green (PE on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays)

Big Ideas in ELA Word Study: • spelling patterns • multiple meaning words, homophones, affixes, using context to determine meaning • playful use of language Nonfiction: • main idea • text features • supporting assertions with text evidence • procedural text Fiction: • story elements including theme, point of view • character analysis • making inferences, drawing conclusions • sequential order • summarizing

  7. Big Ideas in ELA Writing: • spelling pattern introduced on Monday, quiz will be on Friday • cursive writing • conventions • parts of speech • the writing process • personal narratives • expository • research

  8. Math Fact Quizzes Math facts will be checked each Friday. The students are now tested on accuracy rather than speed but are progressing beyond fingers and pictures.

Big Ideas in Math • RIGOROUS problem solving • place value • adding/subtracting up to 3 digits/regrouping • finding values of collections of money • multiplication to 10 x 10; related division facts • fractions • geometry - 2D, 3D, perimeter and area • elapsed time • data and graphs • financial literacy

  10. Math Strategies Math strategies are a developmental progression through thinking processes. In laying the foundation of concepts, your child’s ability to explain is more important than his/her ability to solve. We present a variety of strategies to find the just-right strategy for each student. Our goal - explanation before computation.

  13. Grading Guidelines Math: 3 ½ major, 6 dailies Science: 2 major, 4 dailies Reading: 2 major, 3 dailies Writing: 2 major, 3 dailies Social Studies: 2 major, 4 dailies

  14. K-5 Elementary campuses will utilize the Home Access Center (HAC) for communicating behavior learning targets (BLTs) for your child(ren). Students will receive an overall proficiency level for their progress in 4 competencies: Under each competency there are some sub headings of specific target behaviors students will be expected to master.The four (4) competencies will be rated using three (3)levels of proficiency: Level 3- Proficient Level 2- Approaching Level 1- Needs Support

  16. Policy Regarding Tardies Students entering after 8:40 are considered tardy. No breakfast served after 8:25 a.m. Rise and Shine begins at 8:30. Students with perfect attendance, no tardies, and no early dismissals will be rewarded with a perfect attendance reward.

TISD Attendance Policies Excused absences include: Personal illness (with Doctor’s or parent note) Serious illness or death in the immediate family Medical or dental appointments (with a Doctor’s note) Weather/Road conditions that make travel dangerous Extenuating circumstances approved by the Principal Please submit a written note excusing the absence within THREE (3) days of the absence! Absences for reasons other than those listed above will be considered Unexcused.

  19. Transportation Changes All changes must be communicated by the parent to the front office: Through a written request sent to school with the student and turned in before 3:00 p.m. Through fax request if received by front office by 3:00 p.m. Emails or calls to the teacher will NOT be accepted as official transportation changes.

  20. Lunch Visitors Due to Increased Enrollment (800+) Space Limitations: Odd Dates: K, 2nd, 5th Even Dates: 1st, 4th, 3rd Exception: Birthdays Lunch Birthday Treats: Must be individually wrapped, nut free, and store bought *Ice Cream purchased from the student’s lunch account is an option.

  21. Homework Spelling (Word Study) One phonics rule per week, test on Fridays Students will be given a list of words that fit the pattern for the week. Students need to practice words at home during the week but nothing will be turned in for homework. Weekly math fact quizzes will begin in two weeks (Fridays) Regular Reading and Math homework will be given in the second semester.
